Obituary of Sharon P. Pettengill

HERKIMER - Mrs. Sharon P. Pettengill, age 67, of Herkimer, NY, passed away on Friday September 4, 2015 at Faxton - St. Luke's Healthcare in the town of New Hartford, NY, following a very long and courageous battle with her illnesses. She was constantly surrounded with the love and support of her family. She was born on April 29, 1948 in Herkimer, NY, daughter of Charles and Eleanor (Scanlon) Thompson and was a graduate of Herkimer High School, Class of 1966. Her marriage to Alan Francis Pettengill took place on April 24, 1981 in Ilion. Sharon was a life member and past president of the Herkimer VFW Women's Auxiliary Post 4915 for seven years and a NYS VFW District 4 Ladies President at one time. She retired from NYS department of Corrections, Groveland, NY. Sharon loved to attend garage sales and to collect antiques. She also enjoyed many trips with her siblings. She was an exceptional and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She is survived by her family, husband Alan, her mother, Eleanor, her children, Robert Small and wife Lee Holbrook Small, Daniel Small and wife Ingrid Small, Craig Small and wife Jodie Small, and Layla Small Parker, step-children, Greg Pettengill and wife Julie and Stacey Thornburg, and her sister Cynthia Berberick and her husband Frank, her brothers, Charles Thompson, William Thompson and his wife Bertha, and Ronald Thompson and his wife Karen, and a sister-in-law, Joan Thompson, grandchildren, Zacharie Small, Melanie Small, Megan Small, Tyler Small, Griffin Parker, Nicholas Parker, Nathan Parker, Jack Thornburg, Brian Pettengill, and Jason Pettengill, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Sharon was predeceased by her father Charles Leo Thompson, a sister Marilyn Perrone and her brothers Bruce and James Thompson. A memorial calling hours will be held on Monday September 7, 2015 from 2 until 4 PM with a service at 4 PM at The Enea Family Funeral Home, 220 North Washington Street in Herkimer, NY, with Rev. Janet Gleason, officiating. Those wishing in lieu of floral offerings are asked to donate in her memory to the American Cancer Society. The Herkimer VFW Ladies Auxiliary will gather at the funeral home at 3PM on Monday for a service.
