Obituary of Edna J. Koopmans

RICHFIELD SPRINGS – Mrs. Edna J. Koopmans, age 95, a longtime resident of Richfield Springs, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 12, 2016, at HomeLife at Folts in Herkimer. Born on July 3, 1920, in Liverpool, England, Edna was the daughter of the late Arthur and Janetta (Hamson) Meredith. She was raised and educated in England and was a graduate of All Saints Catholic School in Liverpool. She relocated to the United States in her twenties and on July 11, 1947, was married to Hans Koopmans in Great Neck, Long Island. The two shared in a union of over fifty years until Mr. Koopmans’ passing on April 14, 2000. For many years, Edna worked as a Claim Reviewer for the Metropolitan Insurance Company in Utica and Oriskany. She also held a position with the New York State Historical Association in Cooperstown as a museum teacher and interpreter. Edna was a former member of the NYS Federated Garden Clubs, Inc. District 5, and held positions there as a book reviewer, librarian and committeeperson. She was also a former member and Past President of the Garden Club of Richfield Springs. She is survived by her sister, Ethel Robinson of Liverpool, England; her brother-in-law, Rinse Koopmans of Sint Pancras, Netherlands; her nephews, Michael Meredith, Steven Wickstead, George Wickstead; her niece, Elizabeth Dwyer; her good friends and longtime neighbors, Bill and Kate Huxtable; as well as several cousins. Besides her husband and parents, Edna was predeceased by her beloved son, Jan Meredith Koopmans in 1973; her sister, Irene Wickstead; and her brother, Arthur Meredith. In keeping with Edna’s wishes, there will be no calling hours. Friends and relatives are invited to attend her graveside service, which will take place on Monday, April 25, 2016 at 2:00PM from the Lakeview Cemetery in Richfield Springs, with the Rev. John D. Bartle, Rector of St. John’s Episcopal Church, officiating.
