Obituary of Mary M. Comins

ILION – Mary M. Comins, age 88, formerly of Otsego Street, Ilion, passed away peacefully on Thanksgiving morning, November 24, 2016, at Valley Health Services, in Herkimer, where she resided. She was born on September 29, 1928, in Cincinnati, OH, the daughter of Frank and Clara (Ostenkamp) Smallwood. She grew up in Ilion, attended Annunciation School, and was a graduate of Ilion High School. She met George “Shorty” Comins, and they married on September 4, 1948. He passed away in 2007. Mary became a homemaker and devoted her life to her husband and raising their five children. Mary was a long time parishioner of the Church of the Annunciation in Ilion. She enjoyed spending her time helping her husband with their gumball machine vending business. Surviving family members include her five children, William Comins and his wife, Josephine, of Long Island, Thomas Comins, of Ilion, Margaret “Peg” Lahah and her husband, Carl “Jim”, of Boonville, James Comins, of Ilion, and Kathy Matthews, of Stratton, ME; her sister-in-law, Helen Smallwood, of Dresden, ME; her stepsister-in-law, Alice Brennan, of Ridgewood, NJ; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband; three brothers, John, Robert and Richard Smallwood; and her beloved grandson, Brian Comins. Friends and relatives are invited to attend visitation on Thursday, December 1, 2016, from 12 noon – 1:00 p.m. at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home’s original location at 102 West St., Ilion. Mary’s Memorial and Celebration of Life service will be held on Thursday, December 1, 2016, at 1:00 p.m., following the visitation, at the family funeral home at 102 West St., Ilion, with Father Paul Catena, Pastor of the Church of the Annunciation, officiating. Interment will be at Armory Hill Cemetery, Ilion, next to her husband. A special thank you is extended to the staff of Valley Health Services for the many years of care and kindness shown to Mary. In Lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Annunciation, 109 West Street, Ilion, NY 13357, or Valley Health Services, Inc., 690 W.
