Obituary of Robert V. Sherry
HERKIMER - Mr. Robert Vincent “Bob” Sherry, age 78, a resident of Herkimer, NY, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 27, 2017, at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Utica, with his devoted family at his bedside.
Born in Astoria, Queens on November 12, 1938, Robert was the son of the late Gasper and Emily (Parsons) Milano. Bob was a graduate of Rome Free Academy (RFA) and the Mohawk Valley Technical Institute (MVTI).
On October 6, 1962, Bob was married to Teresa M. Moretti in St Anthony’s Church in Herkimer by the Rev. Gustave Purficato. They shared a blissful and loving union of 55 years.
Bob began his career in the meat industry in 1962 as a meat cutter for Cut-Rate Supermarkets. Through hard work, he advanced himself to meat department manager and went on to work for Chicago Markets, Big M and finally Great American in Whitesboro, a position from which he retired from in 2003. Upon his retirement, he worked part-time for Oneida County BOCES as a food service representative; gaining great enjoyment from working with the different school districts.
As a good-natured and peace loving man, Bob displayed fine character and principle. He was a proud Dad, Grandpa and, also, a wonderful son-in-law, who’s first and foremost priority was always the well-being of his family. Some of his treasured moments involved traveling to visit his children and grandchildren to attend their sporting events and family celebrations. Bob was an avid sports fan, especially of the NY Yankees. He was the former Vice President of the HCSA Umpire Association and he umpired throughout the Mohawk Valley, as well as Oneida County for over 40 years. He was a former member of the BPO Elks Club and a loyal chairperson for the Republican Party.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Teresa; his daughters, Dana (John) Swierkos of Penfield, NY and Kristin (Bob) Miller of Orchard Park, NY; his son, Scott Sherry of Mechanicsburg, PA; and his grandchildren, Alexandria and Wesley Miller of Orchard Park, NY and Hayden, Samuel and Carleigh Sherry, and their mom, Kara, of Mechanicsburg, PA. He also leaves a brother-in-law, Patrick Moretti, of Herkimer; a sister-in-law, Margaret “Peg” Sherry, of Rome, NY; and his nieces, Whitley (Clay) Boyd of Charleston, SC, Meryl (Jeff) Berger of Naples, FL, and Linda (Gerry) Hitchcock, of Rome, NY.
Bob was predeceased by his brother, Joseph and sister, Patricia.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend visitation for Bob on Sunday, October 1, 2017 from 2:00PM to 4:00PM at the original Enea Family Funeral Home (FKA Holleran Funeral Service) 220 North Washington Street, Herkimer, NY (315) 866-1011. Procession will follow to Calvary Cemetery, Herkimer where he will be laid to rest.
