Obituary of Leroy Johnston

FRANKFORT – Mr. Leroy “Tod” Johnston, age 71, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away on Saturday afternoon, December 21, 2019 at the Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare Center. At the time of his passing, Tod was surrounded by the love and devotion of his family at his bedside. Born on August 26, 1948, Leroy was the son of the late Carl and Katherine (Schuyler) Johnston. He was raised and educated in Frankfort and attended local schools. Soon after completion of his schooling, Tod began his lifelong career in the automotive industry. His first position as a mechanic was with Nehr Chevrolet in Ilion. He then went on to work for Bob Marriot at his auto dealership in the service department. Tod was a faithful, hardworking and dedicated employee. He stayed with the company when it was first purchased by Len Brown and then by Joe Steet and Steve Ponte. He worked his way up through the ranks and was very proud to be the current Service Manager at Steet-Ponte Chevrolet in Herkimer after a career that spanned over fifty years. On August 2, 1969, Tod was wed to the love his life, the former Karen Griffin and together they shared in a blessed union of just over fifty years. Tod and Karen held a celebration at the Frankfort VFW this past summer, where in front of their friends and family, they renewed their vows and re-committed to the promises they made to one another fifty years before. Theirs was a relationship that was truly inspirational. Tod’s primary focus throughout his life was a commitment to providing for his wife and children. As a husband he was strong, dedicated and supportive. He and Karen raised their three children on strong moral values and the traditions of always putting family first. His family was his everything and he was fiercely proud of the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. It was evident in his very demeanor that he had a gift for touching lives and everywhere he went he was sure to know someone. A true outdoorsman, Tod had a love for four-wheeling, camping, boating, fishing and most of all, hunting. He and his brothers, Danny and Carl, spent many years together hunting his property in the Town of Norway and made countless hours of wonderful memories together. He and his wife, Karen, along with his brother and sister-in-law, Leonard and Cindy, had many travel adventures together throughout the years. Tod was a guiding light to the loved ones he leaves behind and his presence will be missed but never forgotten. He is survived by his beloved wife, Karen; his daughters, Shirley Farnsworth and husband, Wayne, of Schuyler and Shelley Johnston of Frankfort; his son, Tod Johnston and wife, Christina of Colchester, CT; his grandchildren, Johnathan Furner, Madison Furner, Michelle Farnsworth, Rachel Farnsworth, Tod Johnston, Skylar Johnston and Juliana Johnston; his special friends, Rick and Floy Baldwin; along with many siblings, nieces and nephews. Friends and relatives are invited to attend calling hours on Friday evening, December 27, 2019 from 4:00PM – 7:00PM at the Enea & Ciaccia Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Road, Town of Frankfort, Ilion, NY (315) 894-8000. Tod’s funeral service and Celebration of Life will commence on Friday at 7:00PM at the funeral home, immediately upon the conclusion of visitation. Spring interment will take place in Oak Hill Cemetery. Tod’s family has entrusted his final wishes to Harry and Kevin Enea and Martin L. Ciaccia, Funeral Directors.
