Obituary of Michael J. Fiorentino

FRANKFORT – Mr. Michael J. Fiorentino, age 92, a lifelong Mohawk Valley resident, passed away peacefully on Sunday evening, March 8, 2020, at The Grand Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Born on April 3, 1927, Michael was the son of the late Dominick and Lucia (Girgenti) Fiorentino. His childhood years were spent in Herkimer until his call to duty on July 31, 1944, when he proudly enlisted with the United States Navy and went off to defend our country during World War II. Michael obtained the rank of Seaman Second Class and when the war ended, he received his honorable discharge on June 13, 1945. Upon his return home from war, Mike went back to school and earned his high school diploma at Frankfort High School. On December 7, 1946, Michael was joined in Holy Matrimony to the former Phyllis M. Palumbo. Together, Mike and Phyllis shared in a loving and devoted union of sixty-six years until Phyllis’ passing on November 8, 2012. Mike’s career was spent with the United States post office and he served as the Postmaster for Griffiss Air Force Base for many years until his retirement. He was a member and former Commander of the Frankfort American Legion Post 845, as well as a longtime parishioner of Our Lady Queen of Apostles Church in Frankfort. Life, for Mike, was centered around the bond he shared with his family and friends. He loved to cook, tend to his home and gather his family together for holidays and Sunday dinners. He was a longtime member of the St. Francis di Paola Society and enjoyed spending time with his boys at the club. Above all else, he was a proud and supportive grandfather to his beloved grandchildren and was an integral part of their lives from the time they were small. He will be missed but his legacy will forever live on through them. Mike is survived by his children, Michael and Theresa Fiorentino, Dennis and Doreen Fiorentino and Deborah Fiorentino, all of Frankfort. Always in his heart was the memory of his son, Dominick Fiorentino, who passed away in 1968. He also leaves his grandchildren, Lisa and Craig Newell of Buffalo, Dominick Fiorentino and Tabitha Sportello of Frankfort, Daniel and Eva Fiorentino of Frankfort and Danielle Fiorentino of Utica; his great-grandchildren, Chase, Carina and Lena; his sister and brother-in-law, Adeline and George Lagess of Florida; his brother and sister-in-law, Kelly and Kay Fiorentino of Florida; his in-laws, James and Mary Fran Palumbo and Theresa Palumbo; along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. A special thank you is extended to the 2nd Floor Staff of The Grand Rehabilitation and Nursing Center at Mohawk Valley, for the care and compassion shown to Mike and his family through his stay during these last few months. Friends and relatives are invited to attend Mike’s funeral service which will commence on Saturday morning, March 14, 2020 at 9:30AM at Our Lady Queen of Apostles Church, where his Funeral Mass will be offered by Rev. Francis Vivacqua. The family will receive visitors at the conclusion of mass. Procession will follow to Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Frankfort where Mike will be interred with military honors conferred by the United States Navy.
