Varin, age 92, of Galinsky Apartments, 105 Protection Avenue, Herkimer, New York, passed away on Thursday morning, July 16th, 2020, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, New York. Charlie was born Christmas Day, December 25, 1927, a son to the late Adolph and Sarah (Elthorpe) Varin, in Ilion, New York. Raised in his early years in this area, his schooling took place in Mohawk. He graduated from Mohawk Central School in 2004. This graduation accomplishment meant so much to Charles and his family as well. He worked so hard for that moment, as he was obligated to serve his country during World War II, namely with the United States Navy Seabees. Charles married Alice Sweet. He was then married to Jeanine Gay who passed, in 1989. He married Winifred Brooks Hilsinger, in 1999 and they made their home in Cedarville NY, until her passing in 2016. Charles worked with Remington Arms in Ilion for many years. He dedicated much of his time to local veteran organizations and just loved to play cards with “The Girls” at Galinsky’s. He was affectionately referred to as “The Puzzle - man.” He had so many wonderful holidays dressing as Santa Claus and enjoyed baseball. Charlie and Winnie could be found most weekends ‘honky – tonking’ to country music and dancing up a storm. We will always cherish the memories. Charlie is survived by his children, James (Nancy) McGowan, of Fort Plain, New York, Charlene Graham, of Fort Plain, New York, Charles “Chuck” (Terri) Varin, of Troy, New York, Keith (Darlene) Varin, of Herkimer, New York, Joseph (Debbie) Varin, of Cassville, New York, Cynthia (James) Simonds, of Portlandville, New York and Cheryl (Scott) Lamphere, of Dolgeville, New York.
