LITTLE FALLS – Harry F. Mornelli, age 93, a lifelong Little Falls resident, passed away peacefully on Tuesday evening, January 19, 2021. Born on July 31, 1927, Harry was the son of the late Angelo and Isola (Forestieri) Mornelli. After his graduation from Little Falls High School with the Class of 1944, Harry enlisted with United States Navy. He proudly served his country during World War II and was stationed overseas in Guam. On July 30, 1946, he received his honorable discharge as a Seaman, First Class. His patriotism carried with him throughout his life and he was very active in Veteran’s affairs. He was a Past Commander of the New York State Chapter of the National Department of Italian American War Veterans; concurrently serving on the finance committee for the National Chapter as well. He was also a Past Commander and Quarter Master for the DeCarlo-Staffo Post in Little Falls. Upon his return from military duty, Harry attended and graduated from the American Radio Institute in Syracuse in 1949. On March 25, 1951, Harry was united in marriage with the former Constance Zentek at the Little Falls Polish National Catholic Church in Little Falls, and together they shared in a blessed union of over forty-eight years until Constance’s passing on November 11, 1999. Their family takes comfort in knowing that the two of them are once again reunited in Heaven. Harry began his career with General Electric in Syracuse where he worked for five years. During that time he was Assistant Chief Steward of the IEU Labor Union. He went on to take a position at Burrows Paper Corporation in Little Falls, where he worked for many years until his retirement in 1989 as a Shipping Foreman. He was also the President of the United Papermakers (AFL-CIO) local 438 and Commissioner of the NY State ABC board throughout his tenure. Aside from his family, work and civic endeavors, Harry was very much involved in the well-being of his community. He served as Chairman of the Little Falls Democratic Committee and was a First Ward Alderman and President of the Common Council for six terms. He also served on many committees and boards throughout the years; from the local PTA to the Herkimer County Cancer Society Executive Board, Harry was active in so many of the local organizations. If Harry wasn’t following the Yankees or enjoying a nice round of golf, he was surely bantering with someone about politics, which was his passion. He spent his summers in Little Falls and enjoyed winters in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with family and friends. His large presence and huge personality will be missed by everyone that knew him. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Kathy Mornelli of Little Falls; along with many nieces, nephews and friends. Aside from his parents and beloved, Constance, he was predeceased by his brothers, Gino Mornelli and Ronnie Mornelli; and his sisters, Elda Varano and husband, Greg, Olga Fusco and husband, Greg, and Rena Scialdo and husband, Rudolph; and his in-laws, Charlotte Cziko and husband, Stephen, Barbara Spurio and husband, Mario, Florence Johnson and husband, Donald and Paulina Zentek. Due to current health restrictions, there will be no formal funeral services at this time. A graveside service will take place in the spring in Holy Spirit Polish National Cemetery where Harry will be laid to rest with his wife. A date and time will be announced.
