Obituary of Ardine F. Southwick

ILION – Ardine Fish Southwick, age 94, formerly of Ilion, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 6, 2021, at the Waterville Residential Care Center, Waterville, NY. Ardine was born on March 18, 1926, in South Glens Falls, NY, the daughter of Hazel G. Durrin Fish and Theodore Howland Fish. She graduated from South Glens Falls High School class of 1944. On August 2, 1947, she was united in marriage to Calvin Southwick, II, by the Rev. Dr. Cecil E. Pearson, in the Friends Church, South Glens Falls. Theirs was a loving union of 61 years. Cal affectionately called her “The Queen” and he always treated her that way. Ardine was employed by the Glens Falls Insurance Company before and during the early part of her marriage. She also worked in the psychology department at St. Lawrence University, Canton, NY and for many years Ardine was Secretary/Treasurer of the Cal Southwick Insurance Agency, in Ilion, NY, retiring in 1988. Ardine was a birthright Quaker and a very active member of the South Glens Falls Church. After moving to Ilion she and her family joined the First Presbyterian Church. Her church participation memories were very important to her. Activities and affiliations included past President of the Veterans Wives Association, at St. Lawrence University, past President of the Ilion Parent Teacher Association, past President of the Historical Club, of Ilion, past President of the Presbyterian Women’s Association, of Ilion, Ordained Elder in the Presbyterian Church, of Ilion, past President of the Mohawk Valley Business Woman’s Organization and member of the Ladies of Ziyara Shriners. Ardine also enjoyed volunteer work at the Presbyterian Home, New Hartford, NY. Ardine was a loving mother and wife and her many friends will so remember her that way. Willing to share, she took time to “smell the roses along the way”. She was a good listener to young and old and offered her thoughts on basic common sense, especially to her family. Many relatives and friends benefitted from her influence on their lives. Her children fondly remember Mom ironing in the laundry as they arrived home from school so she could talk to them about their day as soon as they walked in the house. Survivors include her two daughters and sons-in-law, Suzanne S. Getman and William H. Getman, of Waterville, NY and Dianne S. Shapiro and Nelson S. Shapiro, of Ticonderoga, NY; one son, Calvin Southwick, III and daughter in-law, Jody L. Southwick, of Ilion, NY; four grandchildren and their spouses, Gregory R. Getman, Jillian G. Kervin and William, David S. Shapiro and Caitlin, and Jamian S. Shapiro and Brittany; three great-grandchildren, Julia H. Kervin, Aiden T. Kervin, and Max J. Shapiro; and several nieces and nephews. Ardine was pre-deceased by her mother at age 6 and was then raised by her loving grandmother, Gertrude Ross Durrin. She was also pre-deceased by her devoted husband; as well as her father; grandmother; stepmother, Marjorie Freeman Fish; two sisters and their husbands, Ruth (Arthur) Smith and Gertrude “Trudy” (Thomas) Ward; two sisters-in-law and their husbands, Jane (Franklin) Hansen and Marjorie (John) Thurlow; one niece and one nephew.
