Obituary of Angela P. Swartwout

UTICA – Angela P. “Angie” Swartwout, age 83, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday morning, February 9, 2021 at the MVHS St. Luke’s Campus with her loving daughter, Debbie, at her side. Born on September 12, 1937 in Rome, Angela was the eldest daughter of the late Joseph and Livia (DiMarco) Spado. She spent her childhood years in Rome and was a graduate of Rome Free Academy with the Class of 1955. Angie was wed to John “Jack” Swartwout on November 18, 1967 in St. John the Baptist Church in Rome. Together, they purchased a home on Woodlawn Ave in Utica and started a family with the birth of their only daughter, Debbie. They spent almost seventeen years in a loving and devoted union until John’s untimely passing on August 18, 1984. After the loss of her husband, Angie was blessed to find love again with Mr. Mario Iagnocco and the two shared companionship and togetherness until Mario’s passing on May 11, 1997. For over twenty-five years, Angie spent her career with the ARC in Utica as a receptionist. She made many lasting friendships with her co-workers and after her retirement continued to busy herself by her various involvement with non-for-profits and volunteer organizations in our area. She spent many years as a volunteer with the Stanley Theater and was a familiar face for many of the patrons over the years at various events there. She was also involved with the Adirondack Scenic Railroad where she spent countless hours on the team of volunteer workers. More recently, Angie got involved with the Abraham House’s mission in the Greater Utica and Rome areas. She happily volunteered at various fundraisers including the Annual March Meatball Madness and Hummingbird Classic Golf Tournament, as well as spending time in the Bird’s Nest Thrift Store. Angie’s philanthropic heart extended beyond just her volunteer work and charitable giving; she was always doing for others and constantly gave of herself for the well-being of her family and friends. She kept herself active and was always classy in demeanor and well put together. Angie was a life member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority having been inducted in March of 1958. She was also a longtime parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes Church and was an integral part of the church community, serving on various councils over the years including the Bereavement Committee. As a mother and grandmother, she always put her daughter and grandchildren first; never missing an opportunity to be there for an event or milestone in their lives. She knew how to have a good time and loved a party, always at the center of family celebrations and gatherings. She had kindness in her heart and was a constant supporter of those that she loved and her presence will be dearly missed by those that she leaves behind. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Rich Matusiak of Watertown; her grandchildren, Jarod Matusiak and Jocelyn Matusiak; her special brother with whom she shared a close bond, Orlando Spado of Beverly Hills, CA; her siblings, Richard and Marlene Spado of Miami, FL and Pasqualina and Frank DiPasqua of Cicero, NY; her sister-in-law, Mary Spado of Liverpool, NY; her brothers-in-law, James Swartwout of Rochester, NY and Gene Aquino of Rome, NY; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, with special mention of her godchildren, James Spado, Nicole Varrenti and Marie Greer; along with countless friends too numerous to mention.
