Obituary of Jean H. Russell

MOHAWK-PENN YAN – Jean H. Russell, age 95, of Penn Yan and formerly of Mohawk, passed away on Saturday, April 3, 2021, at the Penn Yan Manor Nursing Home, in Penn Yan, NY. She was born on November 1, 1925, in Saranac Lake, NY, the daughter of Ralph and Gladys (Parsons) Hutchins. Jean graduated from Saranac Lake High School and Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School, in N.Y.C. On August 21, 1949, she married Theodore “Ted” Russell and they lived happily together for 68 years, until his death, on December 5, 2013. Jean was employed as a secretary at the Adirondack Council Boy Scouts of America, Herkimer Co. ARC and the General Herkimer Council Boy Scouts of America. She was a member, Vestryman and clerk of the Vestry, at the Grace Episcopal Church, of Mohawk and also past President of the Episcopal Church Women. Jean was a member of Order of the Eastern Star, Mohawk and Whiteface Mountain Chapters, Order of the Amaranth and was a life member of the NYS Women’s Bowling Association. Jean was active in area bowling leagues for many years, in Utica and Frankfort. She was also past President of the Foothills Girl Scouts Council and held various other offices with the Girl Scouts Council, besides being a life member of the Girl Scouts. Jean was a past Scout Commissioner of the Boy Scouts, past President of the Valley United Fund and past Community Campaign Chairman, working tirelessly for the United Way over the years and served on the Board of Directors. She was also past District Director of Federated Garden Clubs, of N.Y.S., officer on the Board of N.Y.S. Garden Club and past President of the Minnowbrook Garden Club, of Mohawk. Finally, Jean was a member of the D.A.R. and the Colonial Dames. She is survived by her daughter, Betsy Russell-Orr and son-in-law, Chip Orr, of Penn Yan and Mariangela “Angie” Spotorno Moreira, of Belo Horizonte, Brazil; her grandchildren, Kimberly Weeker and her husband, Brett, of Florida, Alyson Orr and Todd Haberfield, of Canandaigua, NY and Jeremey Orr, of Penn Yan; her niece, Alison Russell and Walt Wadlow, of Santa Cruz, California; special friends, Rosemary Brown, Kathy Moynihan, Penny and Dave Coon, Mark and Vicky Duesler, Elsa and Ken Marmet; and Judy, Lisa, Alison and Terry Shoff. Jean was predeceased by her parents; her maternal aunts, Nita (Charles) Green and Ella Horton, all of Saranac lake; her son, Richard R. Russell; her husband, Theodore E. Russell, of Mohawk, NY; and brother and sister-in-law, William and Jean Russell, of California. There will be a Celebration of Jean’s life and Graveside Committal Service to be held 12 noon, Thursday, May 6, 2021, at the Pine Ridge Cemetery, in Saranac Lake, NY. There are no scheduled calling hours or church services because of the continued COVID 19 Pandemic.
