Obituary of Robert James Haughton

ILION - Robert (Bob) James Haughton, 93, died peacefully with family by his side on June 29, 2021, at his home in Palm Coast, FL. He was born in Little Falls, NY on January 14, 1928, the son of Claude A Haughton and Nellie Mae (Satterlee) Haughton, and was raised in Ilion, NY. He was a member of Ilion High School, Class of 1945, where he lettered in football and track, boxed and played trumpet in the dance band. Bob enlisted in the United States Marine Corps one week after his 18th birthday. After his discharge, he enrolled in Syracuse University, where his studies were interrupted when recalled to proudly serve in the Korean War. Bob married his beloved Anne Marie Harris on June 14, 1952, in Bogota, NJ. Early in their marriage, Bob completed his studies at Syracuse University, earning a BA in English and Journalism and a MA in Education. While attending Syracuse, he boxed, played lacrosse and worked at Pepsi Cola. In 1956, Bob began a 32-year career with General Electric highlighted by his time in Daytona Beach working on the Apollo program. With a growing family in tow, they relocated many times, including time spent in Norristown, PA, and Scottsdale, AZ, culminating in 1971 when he and Anne unpacked the six kids and settled in Wilton, CT. Bob retired from GE in 1988 as Manager, Employee Relations, International and Canadian Group. Bob had a beautiful camp built (Ravens’ Rest) on the shore of Fourth Lake, Old Forge, NY. It was here that Bob found solace while enjoying a serene view of the lake, a great book or newspaper (as he was a voracious reader), his favorite seat on the deck, with his sweet Anne reading in a chair beside him while blasting jazz on his stereo. He loved planting and caring for beautiful flowers in pots that adorned the deck, chopping firewood and teaching the grandkids about picking wild berries while telling tales of his youth. The hummingbird feeder was always full. He and Anne enjoyed the Adirondacks, taking hikes and walks, breathing in the fresh air. It was here at Ravens’ Rest that good times were had with frequent visits from friends and family. For years, Bob hosted the annual “Ravens’ Reunion”, attended by many high school friends and spouses. The Ravens were legendary in his hometown of Ilion, and Bob, an aspiring author, took special delight in regaling them with his poems of youth and the passage of time. Bob was an avid Syracuse University sports fan; he was particularly fond of Jimmy Brown and Jim Boeheim. An avid golfer, he was a past member of Silvermine (CT) Golf Club, Hammock Dunes (FL) Club, and Thendara (NY) Golf Club. The American & US Marine flags were always flown on the camp’s dock. Bob was a man of integrity; self-reliant, dedicated, resourceful, and courageous, he was a true Marine. Bob is survived by his six children, Katherine Morgan, of Flagler Beach,FL, Camille (Fred Ellegard), of Newington, CT, Michael (Kathleen), of Orange, CT, James (Roseanne), of Monroe, CT, Matthew (Lisa), of Fairfield, CT and Mary Schuchman (Peter Jr.), of Sinking Spring, PA. He was a loving grandfather to ten grandchildren, Timothy (Laura) Haughton, Christina (Dennis) Griecci and Joseph Haughton, Katie, Peter III and Annie Schuchman, Sean and Ryan Haughton, Padraig and Christopher Haughton; and five great-grandchildren, Tyler and Caroline Haughton and Henry, Emilia and Anna Griecci; his sister, Jane Anne Dial, of Odessa, TX; sister-in-law, Theresa Haughton, of Wilmington, NC; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. Bob was predeceased by his loving wife of 63 years, Anne Marie Harris Haughton; brother, Milton A. Haughton; brother-in-law, Keith Dial; sisters-in-law, Joyce Harris and Mary Duncan and her husband, Jim Duncan. Donations may be sent to Old Forge Fire Department, PO Box 1170 Old Forge, NY 13420. Friends and relatives are invited to attend Bob's Funeral Mass on Friday, July 15, 2022 at 11:00AM at Holy Family Parish in Little Falls, NY, officiated by Rev. Brian Slezak, Pastor.
