Obituary of Frank A. Altamura

NORTH CAROLINA - Frank Anthony Altamura, 70, of Greensboro, passed away peacefully in his home on July 19, 2021. Frank Altamura was born on February 3rd, 1951, to parents Michael and Bessie; he was the second oldest of four children and graduated from Herkimer High School in 1969. Frank earned a Political Science degree from Onondaga College in Syracuse, and worked in law enforcement for several years throughout upstate New York. During this time, he also volunteered with a fire and rescue squad. In 1981, Frank changed career paths and began work as a Safety Officer with the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York, later transferring to the Griffiss Air Force Base and eventually retiring from Langley Air Force Base as the Deputy Chief of Ground Safety after many years of service. Frank loved his job and particularly enjoyed working with cadets and traveling around the world. When he retired in 2012, Frank was awarded the Meritorious Service Award to commemorate his storied career in the Air Force. Frank also served as a scout master for several years with his son’s Boy Scout troops. In his free time, Frank enjoyed golfing, reading legal thriller novels, playing cards, and dining and sharing stories with his friends and family. Frank was preceded in death by both parents and his sister, Patricia Bolen. He is survived by his siblings Michael Altamuro (and wife, Nancy), Laura Lawrence (and husband, Billy), and brother-in-law Allen Bolen; children Marie Hartwell Ricarte, Michelle Powers (and husband, John), and Matthew Altamura (and wife, Shannon); grandchildren Alicia Matthews, Haley Matthews, Jackson Ricarte, Lucas Ricarte, Mackey Powers, Shane Powers, Rowan Altamura, and Vivian Altamura; and, great-grandchildren Roman Field, Rocco Roy, Zane Powers, and Mara Powers. Frank was also very close to his nephew Marrick Lawrence and niece Bessie Lawrence, as well as many friends throughout North Carolina, Virginia, and New York. The family is especially grateful for the special relationships Frank enjoyed in his later years at his Carolina Estates retirement home. A celebration of life service is being planned for June 2022 in Mr. Altamura’s hometown of Herkimer, New York, and details will be updated publicly as they are confirmed.
