Obituary of Judy A. Shields

HERKIMER – Mrs. Judy A. Shields, age 101, passed away on Tuesday evening, November 30, 2021, in Herkimer, NY. The family is very grateful for the care received at the Valley Health Services. She was born on May 27, 1920, in Elmira, New York, a daughter to the late William & Erna (Hauenstein) Ritter. She was a graduate of Elmira Free Academy and from Syracuse University, having received education in Mexico on a Ford Fellowship Scholarship. She has lived in the Mohawk/Herkimer areas for many years. She was married to John T. Shields, on August 4, 1974, in Elmira, NY, a 41 year union. John passed away on August 16, 2015. She was last employed with Southside High School, Elmira, as a Spanish Teacher. She taught physical education, in Mohawk, New York, Spanish, in Penfield, New York and provided choreography for Elmira and Penfield school musicals for 12 years. She was a member of St. Francis de Sales Church, of Herkimer. She is survived by family: William Mark Ritter, Archie Bautista and Mary Ellen Ritter, along with Varnum and Ellen Harris and their daughters, Anne and Mary, as well as family member, Cathy Cimino. She is predeceased by a brother, William H. Ritter. Her family has planned all funeral and burial arrangements with the Enea Family Funeral Home, 220 North Washington Street, in Herkimer, NY, original location, Funeral Directors Harry J. & Kevin E. Enea and Martin L. Ciaccia (315) 866-1011. Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 10, 2021, at 10:30 AM from the Enea Family Funeral Home, 220 North Washington Street, in Herkimer, followed by a Funeral Mass, which will be celebrated on Friday at 11:00 AM, at St. Francis de Sales Church, North Bellinger Street, in Herkimer, with Rev. Leo Potvin, officiating. Interment at the Village of Mohawk Cemetery will take place in the spring of 2022. Calling hours at the funeral home on North Washington Street will be the same day of the funeral, December 10, 2021, from 9:30 AM until 10:30 AM.
