Obituary of Joanne M. Scofield

ILION – Mrs. Joanne (Rieben) Scofield, age 65, of Ilion, passed away peacefully on Friday morning, December 3, 2021, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Her passing occurred in the privacy and comfort of her home with her loving family by her side. Born in Utica on February 7, 1956, Joanne was the daughter of the late Chester and Theresa (King) Rieben. She was raised and educated in local schools. On November 17, 1974, Joanne was joined in marriage to her true love, Robert Scofield, with whom she shared a blessed union of over twenty-nine years until Robert’s untimely passing in 2004. For many years Joanne was employed by New York State, working at the Mohawk Correctional Facility in the Walsh Regional Medical Unit; a position from which she retired in 2016. Joanne was known to always be the caregiver, never wanting to be fussed over in return. Her family were her everything and she absolutely adored her grandchildren. She enjoyed trips to the casino and held a special place in her heart for angels. The Christmas season was by far her favorite and nothing gave her greater joy than gathering her family together for the holidays. Joanne is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Cathy Scofield of Utica; her daughters and son-in-law, Pamela Dixon of Herkimer and Sabrina and Mike Bottom of Florida; her eight cherished grandchildren, Michael, Andrew, Corey, Meagan, Bryan, Dennis, Jr., Robert, III, and Ryan; along with her seven beloved great-grandchildren, Cole, Mason, Skylar, Callen, Lincoln, Elliot and Xander. She also leaves her fiance, Richard Burton and his family; her sister, June Rieben; her sister-in-law, Barbara Orr; and one very special aunt, Mary Mueller; along with numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and friends. Joanne was predeceased by her granddaughter, Aaliyah; her grandsons, Michael, Richie and Jackson; and her two brothers, John and Jimmy Rieben. The Scofield family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the nurses and staff of Hospice and Palliative Care for the kindness, compassion and care shown to Joanne through the final days of her journey. Joanne was also blessed to share a special bond with her granddaughter, Meagan, who became not only a personal caregiver and confidante, but tended to her grandmother’s every need throughout her illness. Friends and relatives are invited to attend visitation for Joanne on Wednesday afternoon, December 8, 2021 from 4:00PM – 6:00PM at the Enea & Ciaccia Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Road, Town of Frankfort, Ilion, NY (315) 894-8000. Joanne’s funeral service and Celebration of Life will commence on Wednesday at 6:00PM, immediately upon the conclusion of calling hours. Interment will take place at Forest Hill Cemetery on Thursday, December 9, 2021 at 10:00AM, where Joanne will be laid to rest beside her husband, Robert.
