Obituary of James W. Tutty

PALM HARBOR, FL – James W. Tutty, 81, of Palm Harbor, Florida, formerly of Mohawk, New York, passed away January 3, 2023, in Florida. James, fondly known as "Jim,” was born on May 8, 1941 and grew up in Mohawk, NY. He is the son of the late Margaret and Lynn Tutty. Jim graduated from Mohawk High School, in 1959 and entered the United States Army, in 1962. He was a member of Company C 82nd Airborne and was stationed in Germany. He was honorably discharged, in 1965. Jim married the former June Preis, on February 18, 1967, in Mohawk, NY and they enjoyed a loving union of more than 55 years, both in New York and Florida, where they moved to, in 2004. Jim was a loved and respected resident of Florida’s Highland Lakes (Palm Harbor) Retirement Community, where he was former Vice President of the Nature’s Cove Homeowners Association, member of the Golf Community, Instructor of Practice and Procedure as well as a Boat Captain. Jim worked as a Lineman and Engineer for local telephone companies, for more than 25 years. He was very active in the Mohawk and Ilion Communities for more than 50 years, including as Mohawk Municipal Commission President, Volunteer Firefighter, Exempt Firefighter, past Mohawk Fire Chief, member of the Mohawk Firematics Drill Team, 28 years, Mohawk Little League coach, 33 years, Ilion Pop Warner Football Coach, Mohawk Modified Girl’s Basketball Coach and Explorer Scout Leader. In 1987, the State Assembly of New York honored Jim for his many years of volunteer service to the youth of the communities. In 1994, the Mohawk Little League dedicated its field in Jim’s honor. Tutty Field is still in use today by the youth in the Mohawk and Ilion Communities. Jim loved to golf in his spare time and was a member of several leagues both in New York and Florida. He was also a member of the American Legion. But his first priority was always his family and nothing was more special to him than his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved to coach, spend time with friends and travel with his wife. They were proud to have visited all 50 states. Jim is survived by his loving wife, June; daughters, Jacquelyn Tutty Grimshaw and her husband, Adam and Cindy Tutty; sister, Marge King; brother, Ken Thomes and his wife, Becky; sister, Pam Jones and her husband, Dan; brother, Jack Thomes; sister, Lisa Brouillette; grandchildren, Nicole Jennett, Amelia Grimshaw, Audrey Grimshaw and Matthew Lupinski; granddaughter-in-law, Patti Tutty; great-grandchildren, Gracie Jo Tutty, Jimmy Tutty, Kaitlyn Tutty, Hunter Tutty, Landen Brewer, Kaden Brewer, Jordee Brewer, Brooklyn Lindsay and Braylen Lindsay; and sister-in-law, Lorrain Scofield. He is also survived by his aunt, Nancy Murphy, as well as several beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. Special friends include Chappie and Sharon Clapper, Doris Rathbun, Marjorie Obreza-Chetney, Matthew Obreza, Ron and JoAnn Duga, Don and Nancy Breitbach, Leo Bala and Orbano LaPorte. Jim was predeceased by his mother, Margaret Thomes; father, Lynn Tutty; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Nancy and Joseph Pruskowski; grandson, James Michael Tutty; brother-in-law, Bryan King; special uncle, Edward Murphy; cousin, Mal Rathbun and special friend, Milt Bouchard. Calling hours to honor Jim will be held on Friday, January 13, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., at the Enea & Ciaccia Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Road, Ilion (Town of Frankfort). The Mohawk Exempt and Active Firefighter’s Service will be held 6:45 p.m., at the funeral home, Friday evening. Jim’s Celebration of Life will commence on Saturday, January 14, 2023, at 11 a.m., at the Mohawk Reformed Church, 20 S. Otsego Street, Mohawk. Burial will follow later in the spring, with full military honors, at the Mohawk Cemetery.
