Obituary of Jean M. Van Leuven

MOHAWK – Mrs. Jean Marlene (Ramnitz) Van Leuven, age 89, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 3, 2023, at Albany Medical Center. Born in North Canaan, Connecticut on January 16, 1934, Jean was the daughter of the late Frank and Frieda (Weinberg) Ramnitz. She was raised and educated in Millbrook, NY and graduated from local schools. On July 19, 1951, Jean was married to John L. Van Leuven and together their love partnership spanned seventy-one blessed and beautiful years. Together they created a family which continues to grow today and this will forever remain both of their legacies. Jean and John established their home in Pleasant Valley, New York where Jean proudly served for many years as the Town Clerk. Upon retirement, the couple relocated to Barefoot Bay, Florida where Jean truly enjoyed her “extended vacation.” As the golden years came, Jean and John made the decision to relocate to Mohawk ten years ago to be closer to their family. Blessed by living a few doors down from her daughter, Jean created lasting memories and found no greater pleasure than doting on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her earthly presence will be missed but she will forever remain in the hearts of those she leaves behind. Jean is survived by her beloved husband, John; her son, John Van Leuven and his wife, Cheryl, of Hyde Park, NY; her daughter, Heidi Chrisman and her partner, Timothy Roberts of Mohawk, NY; her grandchildren, Justin (Becky) Johannssen of Ilion, Kyle (Chelsea) Johannssen of Appleton, NY, Brittney (Matthew) Watkins of Mohawk, NY, Christopher Van Leuven of Schenectady, Colin Binger, Michael Binger and Corey Chrisman. She also leaves her seven great-grandchildren who lovingly called her “GiGi”, Michael Johannssen, Anna Johannssen, Logan Johannssen, Ava Johannssen, Morgan Johannssen, Maya Watkins and Callie Watkins; her nephew, Sakhr Tariki; and her beloved fur baby, “Lily.” Aside from her parents, Jean was predeceased by her special pets, particularly “Porter” who was forever in her heart. In keeping with Jean’s wishes, there will be no formal funeral services. Her final arrangements have been entrusted to the Enea, Ciaccia & Applegate Funeral Directors.
