Obituary of Margaret Allen

ILION - Margaret "Peggy" Allen, age 78, a lifetime resident of the Herkimer-Ilion area, died on May 4, 2010, at Upstate Hospital, in Syracuse. She was born on July 15, 1931, in Herkimer, NY, the daughter of George and Marion (Welch) Layne. She was a graduate of Herkimer High School, and SUNY Institute of Technology, earning her Bachelor's Degree from the State University of NY. In 1951 Margaret was married to Alonzo H. Rivers II. He died in 1974. She later married Robert Allen of Ilion, who died in 1985. Mrs. Allen was employed by the State Employment Office, and SUNY Institute of Technology for many years, before retiring. She was a longtime member of the Ilion Moose Club, and the Ladies' Auxiliary of the American Legion. She also served as a council member of the Office for the Aging, and an RSVP volunteer, and received a Presidential Award for her work. Her enjoyment, varied interests, and many talents were in gardening, reading, knitting, music, word games, bingo, and genealogy. Survivors include two daughters and two sons-in-law, Patricia (Rivers) Zinkgraf, and her husband George, of Annapolis, MD, and Kris and David Johnston, of Oswego, NY; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Bradford and Joyce Rivers, of Honeoye Falls, NY, and Alonzo Rivers III, of Anchorage, AK; ten grandchildren, Ellen (Rivers) Bischoff, Terry, Kathy, and Kim Rivers, JuliAnne (Rivers) Cochran and husband Matthew, Dulcie and Marsha Rivers, Dennis Johnston, David Johnston, and wife Audrey, and Michael Zinkgraf; and many great-grandchildren. Beside her husbands, she was predeceased by her beloved dog of sixteen years, Maizie, who died earlier this year. Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m., Saturday, May 22, 2010, at Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Rd., Ilion, with Rev. Robert Wollaber, Pastor of the Morning Star United Methodist Church, officiating. Calling hours will be on Saturday, May 22, 2010, from 1:00 p.m.–3:00 p.m., prior to the funeral home service. In lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to Herkimer Co. Humane Society.
