Elthorp, age 71, of 360 Protection Ave., Herkimer, passed away Sunday, October 11, 2009, at her home, with her loving family by her side. She was born to Jacob and Frances (Hogaboome) Newberry in Amsterdam, NY, on December 6, 1937. Shirley attended valley elementary schools and Little Falls High School. Shirley was united in marriage to Charles Elthorp, Sr., on September 1, 1956, a very loving and blessed union of 38 years until Charles' death in February of 1995. Shirley was of the Methodist faith. Shirley was a past member of the Ilion Women of the Moose. She was a Senior Soldier of the Herkimer Salvation Army. She was also a member of the Herkimer Salvation Army's Home League and League of Mercy. She was also a life time member of the Herkimer Polish Community Home. Shirley was very involved in her children's and grandchildren's lives. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren very much. Shirley is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Lynn and James Hawkins, of Mohawk, and Beverly and Richard Paugh, Jr., of Frankfort, and five sons and their wives, Charles, Jr., and Melissa, of Ilion, Robert and Windy, of Mohawk, Terry and Judy, of Mohawk, Deven and Beth, of Mohawk, and Landon and Shelly, of Frankfort. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, Nicole Roberts and her husband, Christopher, Shawna Loomis and her husband, Jason, Mikayla Prastio and her husband, Joseph, James (Jay) Hawkins, Thomas and Tricia Paugh, and Jaclyn, Jennifer, Tabitha, Samantha, Alan, Brittany, Brandon and Adam Elthorp; also eight great-grandchildren, Amanda Loomis, Giana Prastio, Justin Roberts, Dakota McCaw, Katlyn Gould, Seth and Paige White, and Kimberly Aldred; and several stepgrandchildren. She leaves three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Ervin and Betty Newberry, of Mohawk, Clarence, Jr., and Phyllis Guyer, of Mohawk, and Everett Newberry, of Herkimer, and many other in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins. Shirley also leaves many friends and two special friends, Alma Hysack and Sally Dennis, of Herkimer. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Chuck; her parents; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Lillian and Richard Rogers, Sr., and Betty and Frank Johnston; a brother, James and his wife, Rosemarie Newberry; her niece, Linda Perri; and her in-laws, Robert, Gertrude and George Elthorp, and Betty Jean White. Funeral services will be held 11 AM, Thursday, October 15, 2009, at the Applegate-Day &amp; Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Rd., Ilion, with Major James Smith, of the Salvation Army, officiating. Interment will be in Frankfort Center Cemetery, where Shirley will be laid to rest with her husband, Charles. Calling hours are Wednesday, October 14, 2009, from 4 PM – 7 PM at the Applegate-Day &amp; Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Rd., Ilion. In lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to the Shirley M. Elthorp Memorial Fund.
