Obituary of Charles Gay

HERKIMER-MOHAWK - Charles "Chuck" E. Gay, age 69, of Marginal Rd., Herkimer, formerly of Mohawk, passed away on Tuesday, August 17, 2010. He was born on August 20, 1940, in Herkimer, the son of George and Annabelle (Jacquays) Gay, and attended Mohawk schools. At one time he was married to Sherry Scialdo. Later, Chuck lived with his loving companion, Dorothy Miller. He later married Sandra Nabinger. Chuck was the owner/proprietor of the Silverado Inn, in Herkimer, for over fifteen years, retiring in 2010. At one time, he owned and operated his own contracting business, J & C Enterprises. Chuck also owned and operated Car Country in Lakeland, FL, and later owned and operated Verticals by Charles (a vertical blinds factory) in New Jersey. Chuck is best known for his love of competition, whether it be golfing or shuffleboard. He also enjoyed going to his grandchildren's sporting events over the years. Survivors include his three sons, Craig Gay and his loving companion, Paula Aversa, of Mohawk, Kent Gay, of New Jersey, and Ronald Gay, of Florida; his daughter and son-in-law, Holly and Andy Markwardt, of Mohawk; his stepdaughter, Leshia Kozenewski, of Ilion; his stepson, Justin Marmet, of Frankfort; nine grandchildren, Carson, Travis and Jack Murphy, Ian and Anna Markwardt, Charles Cameron Gay, Chris Duncan, Connor Gay and Kyle Kozenewski; his sister, Nedda Thomes, of Mohawk; two brothers, George William Gay, Sr., of Pleasant Lake, and Richard Gay, of Ilion; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his wife, Sandy; his brothers, Bill and Gerald "Jerry" Gay; his sisters, Dorothy Gay, Regina Wood and Annie Earl; and his grandson, Tyler Gay. Friends and relatives are invited to attend Chuck's Memorial Service on Saturday, August 21, 2010, at 4 p.m. at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Rd., Ilion, with Rev. Jill Farnham, Chaplin for Hospice and Palliative Care, officiating. Calling hours are Saturday, August 21, 2010, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., prior to the funeral home service. In lieu of flowers, Chuck requested that everyone have a "cold one" in his memory and/or as an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may also be made to HOSPICE. Envelopes are available at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home, Ilion. Chuck also requested that all his funeral and burial arrangements and services be entrusted to his traditional long time family Funeral Director, Don Applegate.
