Victor McKusick, Pastor, officiating. </p> <b>Cemetery</b> <p>Spring burial will be on the family plot in the North Columbia Cemetery, Town of Columbia, N.Y.</p> <b>Obituary</b> <p>ILION - Calvin Southwick II, of Waterville, formerly of Ilion and Ticonderoga, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009. He was born on June 22, 1924, the son of Calvin Southwick Jr., and Antoinette (Netta) Degenaar Southwick. Mr. Southwick was a native of Glens Falls, N.Y., graduated from Glens Falls High School, Class of 1942, and from St. Lawrence University, Canton, N.Y., Class of 1950, with a degree in Business Administration. On August 2, 1947, Mr. Southwick was married to Ardine Frances Fish of South Glens Falls, N.Y., in the Friends Church of South Glens Falls, N.Y., by the Rev. Dr. Cecil E. Pearson. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, the former Ardine Frances Fish; two daughters and sons-in-law, Suzanne and Attorney William H. Getman of Waterville, N.Y., Dianne and Nelson S. Shapiro of Ticonderoga, N.Y.; one son and daughter-in-law, Jody and Calvin Southwick III, Ilion, N.Y.; one granddaughter, Jillian Dianne Getman; and three grandsons, Gregory Ross Getman, David Southwick Shapiro, and Jamian Scott Shapiro; two sisters, Jane S. Hansen of Hauppauge, N.Y., Marjorie S. Thurlow of Slingerlands, N.Y.; two sisters-in-law, Ruth L. Smith of South Glens Falls, N.Y., and Gertrude "Trudy" E. Ward of Argyle, N.Y.; seven nieces, eight nephews and several cousins. Mr. Southwick served in the United States Navy during World War II, enlisting in January 1943, and was honorably discharged in February 1946. He served in the US Navy Armed Guard and the US Navy Amphibious Forces as a Radio Code Operator Petty Officer and saw action in the European African-Mediterranean theaters as well as the South Pacific. Mr. Southwick's employment began at an early age in Glens Falls, as a paper carrier for seven years for the Glens Falls Times, at the Dutch Creamery, Kansas Coffee Shoppe, Ray's Bottling Works, The Hidden Valley Dude Ranch and the Glens Falls Insurance Group. After World War II and graduating from St. Lawrence University, Mr. Southwick went to work at the Glens Falls Indemnity Company. He completed the Special Agency school, was transferred to their Syracuse Office and traveled Central, Northern and Western parts of New York State, calling on many independent insurance agencies. In 1958, Mr. Southwick purchased McGowan &amp; Richardson Inc., an independent insurance agency in Ilion, N.Y., the oldest established Agency in Ilion, and one of the oldest Agencies in Herkimer County. Over the next 30-year period, he purchased other agencies in Ilion, Herkimer, Jordanville and Cherry Valley. He retired after 30 years, having built a very successful insurance agency, with the able help of his wife, Ardine, who was the Secretary/Treasurer of the Agency. In 1970, the name of the Agency was changed to the Cal Southwick Agency Inc., with the logo "C Southwick for INSURANCE." Ownership transferred to Calvin Southwick III as of August 1, 1988. During this 30-year period, Mr. Southwick was an active member in many religious, civic and fraternal organizations including: A Shriner and member of the DIVAN of ZIYARA Temple, Utica, N.Y.; Past President and Secretary of the Ilion Community Club; Past Director of Herkimer County Chamber of Commerce; Past New York State Director of the Independent Insurance Agents Association of New York; Past President of Herkimer County Insurance Agents Association; Past President of Oneida, Herkimer and Madison Counties of Independent Insurance Agents; Past Commander of Ilion Memorial Post #920, American Legion; Past President of Ilion Council of Churches; Past President of the Board of Trustees, Clerk of the Session, an Ordained Elder, Deacon and choir member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ilion, N.Y.; Mohawk Bicentennial Choir; past President of Mohawk Valley Shrine Club; Past Treasurer and Senior Master of Ceremonies of Ilion Olive Branch Masonic Lodge No. 40; Past Class Reporter, Class of 1950; also, chairman of the 30th Reunion; elected to the Executive Council of the Alumni Association of St. Lawrence University; member of Omicron Chapter, Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, St. Lawrence University; Advisory Director of Mohawk Valley Division of Fleet Bank of NY; Life member of B.P.O.E., Elks Lodge #1444, Ilion, N.Y. and sang lead in the Elks Quartet; VFW Post #502, Frankfort-Ilion, NY; Northside Athletic Club, Ilion, N.Y.; Ilion Fish and Game Club; Assistant Scoutmaster, Troop #9, Ilion, N.Y; Midget League Baseball Club Coach, Ilion, N.Y.; Ilion Central High School Adult Education Committee; Ilion Central High School Parent-Teacher Organization; Mohawk Valley General Hospital Memorial Committee; "40 &amp; 8" Voiture Locale No. 352 and Ilion "Do Nothing" Club-Charter Member. Mr. Southwick, especially enjoyed singing lead in the barbershop quartet, "The German Flatts" along with Ronald Unsinn, tenor, Leonard Wood, baritone, and George Siegel, bass. What started out as a fun evening resulted in a bonding of music and friendship as they traveled throughout the Mohawk Valley for over 30 years. Mr. Southwick was very patriotic, living by the creed, "For GOD, For Country, For Family." Funeral services will be held 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009, at the First Presbyterian Church, 90 Morgan St., Ilion, with Rev. Victor McKusick, Pastor, officiating. Spring burial will be on the family plot in the North Columbia Cemetery, Town of Columbia, N.Y.
