Obituary of Sophie Johnson

Sophie H. Johnson, age 90 CEDARVILLE, NY-In the early morning hours of September 19th while Sophie rested peacefully The Lord extended his hand and brought her to his Kingdom. Sophie was truly a remarkable person in many ways. She lived her life as a role model of unconditional love, compassion, practicality and hard work. Life's journey began for Sophie in Forest City, PA. Her parents both emigrated from Poland, she was born into a family of 13 children. She grew up in a coal mining community and lived as a young child through the Depression. These humble beginnings helped her create the extraordinary person she became, traits she carried throughout her life and taught to those around her. She moved to central NY in the late 1940's and opened a restaurant in Herkimer. Her business flourished and it was here that she met the love of her life and eventually marrying Robert {Bob} Johnson. They decided together to sell the restaurant, purchase a dairy farm and start a family. The early farm life was challenging to say the least; it was her hard work and practical ways that enabled the farm to prosper. In later years they became partners with her daughter Bobbie and her husband Terry in the dairy business. Retirement brought forth a "new beginning" of sorts for Sophie. They spent winters in Florida in a home that was built that Sophie adored. She loved the warm temperatures and her "green thumb" helped to produce fruit trees and plants she so enjoyed. Through her years, Sophie was known as a phenomenal cook who could whip up a meal in the blink of an eye. She was involved in the community as a Cedarville Fire Department Auxiliary Member, a 4-H leader and a Cub Scout Den Mother. When she became a Grandmother, she received a new name from the family, "Nannie". Nannie was the mother, grandmother and great grandmother that books are written of. She expressed her love to all and we all knew we were loved. Nannie loved life, lived for her family and most importantly our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ whom she never forgot in spite of her illness. Her faith was always unwavering and helped me {Cindy} be who I am today. Thanks Mom, I love you for that. She leaves behind her so many to carry on her legacy; her daughter, Bobbie and her husband Terry Jones of Cedarville and their children Philip and Andrea Jones, Michael Jones and Tracy and Kevin LoGalbo; great grandchildren, Alyssa, Nicholas and Colin; a daughter, Cindy and her husband David Rose of Cedarville; as well as grandchildren Eric Rose, Melissa (Rose)Harrison and her husband Jon, and Brittany Rose; a son, Skip Johnson of Mohawk; a son, Tom Johnson and his wife Therese of Holland Patent, as well as grandchildren Kate, Sofia, Sarah, Madeline and Thomas and numerous nieces and nephews. Nannie's last years were challenged with Alzheimer 's disease. We give many thanks to her extended family on the Rose side, very special friends and aides from At Home Care: Becky Bowman, Betty Dygert, and who all loved and helped care for her during this time of need. It is with utmost heartfelt thanks being given to Cindy and her family, in that they made their home "Nannie's Home" and provided un parallel care to her during her remaining time. Cindy gave the greatest gift of 774 sunrises to Nannie, truly a representation of the unconditional love she learned from her mother. In keeping with her wishes, there are no calling hours. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to a graveside service which will be conducted at the Cedarville Cemetery at 11:00 am on Thursday, September 22nd conducted by Father Terrance Healy. Funeral arrangements are entrusted into the care of the Enea Family Funeral Home (Harry, Kevin and Daniel Enea-Directors), 4309 Acme Rd., between Ilion and Frankfort, 894-8000.
