Obituary of Robert Jorrey

<p>Mr. Robert T. Jorrey 84 of 2768 State Rt. 29 Dolgeville, former Town of Salisbury Supervisor and retired assistant Postmaster for Dolgeville, died unexpectedly Friday October 29, 2010 at Little Falls Hospital after suffering an apparent heart attack at his residence. A lifelong resident of the town of Salisbury he was born there on May 31, 1926 the son of the late Robert M. and Elizabeth M. (Snell) Jorrey. He began his education in Salisbury Center by graduating from the Salisbury Center Elementary School, and continued his education by graduating from Dolgeville High School,class of 1942. He joined the Navy in May 1944. A veteran of WW II he served honorably in the United States Navy from May 1944 until his discharge in June 1946. He was awarded the following medals for his service American Theater Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal and the Victory Medal. Bob then continued his military service by joining the Naval Reserves and retiring from there with 20 years of service to our country. His marriage to the former Shirley Lyons took place on July 10, 1948 in the Salisbury Center United Methodist Church. Bob was employed and retired from the United States Postal Service as assistant Postmaster in 1982 with more than 34 years of service. A community minded person he diligently worked for the betterment of the Town of Salisbury, serving as it's Supervisor for 20 years from 1982 until he retired from there in December 2001. Because of his leadership the town progressed with many improvements, including a comprehensive plan, zoning and sub division laws along with the HUD program. One of his visual accomplishments was the restoration of the Covered Bridge along with a recreational park in the Town. He also was credited with the return of the Kuehnle Blacksmith Shop from the New York State Museum. Bob also found the time to be a Scoutmaster for Troop 18, serve as Fire Chief for the Salisbury Center Fire department, organize and cook at the Pancake Suppers at the Salisbury Center Methodist Church, of which he was a member and trustee, organize the Wednesday night snowmobile rides, served as President and was a Charter member of the Salisbury Ridge Runners Snowmobile Club. He was also a licensed umpire for high school and college baseball, basketball and soccer games, belonging to the International Association of approved Basketball officials. He served as Commander of the former American Legion Post of Dolgeville, and was a member of the Dolgeville Masonic Lodge. His personal enjoyment included the Wednesday night card club and the many hours spent at his camp in Leipzig with his family and friends. The Town of Salisbury lost a Faithful and Dedicated man. He is survived by his wife Shirley, his sons and their wives Douglas and Deborah Jorrey of New Castle, Wyoming, Brad and Mary Jorrey of Middletown, NY, and Michael and Jane Jorrey of Dolgeville, his grandchildren Emily, Kyle, Christopher, David and Adam his great granddaughter Kylie, his Sisters in law Clara Jorrey of Dolgeville and Susan Jorrey of Ada, OK., a Brother and Sister in law Alphonse and Lura Camardello of Herkimer, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Wilfred in 2008 and Honorable Richard S. Jorrey Herkimer County Legislator in 2006. Memorial services will be held Thursday November 4, 20010 at 11 AM at the Salisbury Center United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Roger Waldron, pastor and Rev. Robert Jeffers former pastor officiating. A reception will be held immediately following the service in the social room of the church. Burial with Military Honors by the United States Navy will be held at 2PM in the Fairview Cemetery in the Town of Salisbury. There are no calling hours.
