Obituary of Ellen Kane

MOHAWK-ILION - Ellen J. Kane, age 95, of 179 Shoemaker Rd., Mohawk, passed away on Wednesday, April 21, 2010, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Utica. She was born on September 7, 1914, in Clayville, the daughter of Charles and Margaret (O'Neill) Burdick. Ellen graduated from Frankfort High School and attended St. Elizabeth's School of Nursing. On October 10, 1936, she was married to Mitchell C. Kane at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Utica. He died on February 18, 1995. Ellen was employed as a nurse's aide at the Ilion Hospital and later at the Mohawk Valley General Hospital for sixteen years, retiring in 1976. Mrs. Kane was a member of Our Lady Queen of Apostles Church, Frankfort, a former member of the Blessed Sacrament Church, Mohawk, and a member of the Schuyler Senior Citizens. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, taking rides, picnics and going out to dinners. Ellen loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and enjoyed being with them. Survivors include her two sons and daughter-in-law, Richard Kane, with whom she resided in Mohawk, and Gary and Bonnie Kane, of Utica; two grandchildren, Kevin Maine, Sr., and his wife, Sandi, of New York Mills, and Matthew Kane, of Salisbury; three great-grandchildren, Shyanne Maine, of Herkimer, Rose Ellen Maine and Harmony Belle Maine, of New York Mills; several nieces, nephews and cousins; two close personal friends, Jessica Reeves and Frank Reeves; and two sisters-in-law, Marion Roberts, of Yorkville, and Hazel Lindsay and her husband, Rev. Robert Lindsay, of Schuyler. She was predeceased by her son, Edward; her great-grandson, Kevin Maine, Jr.; three sisters, Mary Hicks, Ann Burdick and Margaret Risley; and two brothers, William and Charles Burdick. Funeral services will be held 9:45 a.m., Monday, April 26, 2010, at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Rd., Ilion, and 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady Queen of Apostles Church, Frankfort, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Anthony Barrett, concelebrated by Father Alfred Lamanna and assisted by Deacon James Bower. Interment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, West Winfield. Visitation will be Monday, 9:00 a.m. - 9:45 a.m., prior to the funeral home service. In lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy, contributions may be made to the Ellen J. Kane Memorial Fund. Envelopes are available at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home, Ilion.
