Obituary of Carol Matteson

FRANKFORT - Carol R. Matteson, Frankfort, NY, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 3, 2011, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Utica. She was born on May 5, 1939, at home, the daughter of Earl H. and Nellie Donohue Matteson. Carol graduated from Frankfort-Schuyler Central School with the class of 1957. She furthered her education at Crouse Irving School of Nursing in Syracuse where she became a Registered Nurse. Her professional career included Ilion Hospital, Strong Memorial, Rochester, Norwich Hospital and St. Luke's in Utica. Her compassion for people then led her to become a caseworker for the Oneida County Child Welfare Department, where she was highly regarded. Carol was always known as a brilliant and caring nurse, a profession she returned to as a supervisor at Mohawk Valley General Hospital and Nursing Home, where she finished out her career. Carol was a person of deep faith whose Christian values were reflected in her daily life. She touched the lives of many people and will be sorely missed by all who loved her. She was an animal lover whose favorite pastime was reading, especially Christian literature. Her knowledge of the bible was extensive. She is survived by one sister, Joan, with whom she resided; nieces, Patricia Kelly and Anne Guarnieri, Ilion,NY, Kim Duggins, Marietta, Georgia, and Shari Ballard, Chattanooga, Tennessee; nephews, Franklin Matteson, New Hartford,NY and Bob Ballard, Canton, Georgia; brother-in-law, Robert Ballard, Canton, Georgia; several great and great-great nieces and nephews; as well as many special friends. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by one sister, June Ballard; and three brothers, Earl, Wellington and Franklin. She also leaves behind her two "fuzzies", Clancey and Chloe, whom she loved dearly. Funeral Services will be held 4:00 p.m., Monday, March 7, 2011, at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Rd., Ilion, with Rev. Patti Lawrence, Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Herkimer officiating. Spring burial will be in Norwich Corners Cemetery. Calling hours are Monday, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., prior to the funeral home service. The family wishes to extend sincere appreciation to the staff on the 2nd floor of Folts Homes for their many acts of kindness and services that were provided; to the MOVAC crew whose efforts went above and beyond and finally, to the Emergency Room staff at St. Elizabeth Medical Center whose professional care and kindness will long be remembered. The Matteson family requested that all arrangements be entrusted to Don Applegate, Funeral Director.
