Obituary of Helen D Sivack

LITTLE FALLS: Mrs. Helen D. Sivack, age 94, a lifetime resident of Loomis Street, Little Falls, and a world traveler, passed away on Wednesday, July 6, 2011 in Faxton-St. Luke's Hospital, New Hartford. Helen was born on December 12, 1916 in Herkimer, a daughter of the late Daniel and Mary (Fitzpatrick) DeForrest. She was a graduate of St. Mary's Academy in Little Falls and attended College Center there. On May 1, 1939, Helen married Albert F. Sivack in St. Mary's Rectory in Little Falls. After a 57-year union, he predeceased her in 1996. She was employed at Salada Tea and Allegro Shoe in Little Falls and MDS in Herkimer. Friends will remember her as "Scoop" (later "Flash") for her writing in the Utica OD and Utica Daily Press in the 1950s. As a newswoman she also had her own show, "Talk of the Town," broadcast from her home over WLFH five times a day. Civic minded, she was at one time a member of the Home Bureau, a den mother and Girl Scout Leader, a former chairperson of the March of Dimes Campaign, a long-time president of the Little Falls Historical Society, and a participant in the Little Falls Library Book Club. She was well known for designing and participating in Canal Days floats. She was a member of the Christian Woman's Group and, as a member of Holy Family Parish and its Rosarian Society, she was a Eucharistic Minister to the sick in the hospital. She was honored as a more than 1000-hour volunteer at Little Falls Hospital and also volunteered at Van Allen Nursing Home. She also held many offices with AARP. Her earliest memory was of the Little Falls church bells ringing and neighbors banging pans outside their homes. In asking her grandmother why, grandmother replied, "World War I is over." With her husband, she was an avid Little Falls Mets fan with first baseline seats and also supported team members through housing and meals. She held a passion for the Boston Red Sox, which she shared with her children. She loved to travel, having made several trips to Hawaii and Europe. Close to the time of her death, she was looking forward to July family time with her nephew Daniel DeForrest and his wife Sandy at their Adirondack home. Survivors are her son, Denis Sivack of Brooklyn, daughter, Ellen Miller and her husband Jack of Manlius, and son, Stephen and his wife Debra of Altamont. She also leaves her grandchildren; John Gil and his wife Emily, Kevin Miller and his wife Karen, and Brian Miller and his wife Andrea; great-grandchildren, Garrick and Liam; a sister, Catherine Harrington of Herkimer; and brother-in-law, Robert Sivack of Little Falls. Three brothers, Master Gunnery Sgt. Robert DeForrest (USMC), James DeForrest, and Daniel DeForrest predeceased her as did her sister Mary Sivack who had married Albert's brother William. Cremation has taken place. The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, July 10, from 5-8 PM at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 24 W. Monroe Street, Little Falls. Mrs. Sivack's funeral will commence on Monday, July 11, with prayer at 10:30 AM at the funeral home. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Reverend Thomas Vail at 11:00 AM in Holy Family Parish Church. Procession will then follow to Rural Park Cemetery, Inghams Mills. Mrs. Sivack's family extends special thanks to the doctors, nurses, and entire staff of Little Falls Hospital and Faxton-St. Luke's Hospital for the care and compassion shown her. Personal appreciation goes to her supportive neighbors and the Sisters of St. Joseph from Helen's early schooling through her years of friendship with Sr. Marilyn Hayes and the prayerful watch of Sr. Maureen at St. Luke's. Donations in Helen's memory may be made to The Jimmy Fund, 10 Brookline Place West, Sixth Floor, Brookline, MA 02445-7295 or the Little Falls Library, 10 Waverly Place, Little Falls, NY 13365.
