ST. JOHNSVILLE- Mr. Sigmund "Ziggy" Stankewich, 90, of Royal Place passed away on June 23, 2011 at St. Johnsville Rehabilitation and Nursing Center with his loving family at his side. He was born on March 24, 1921 in St. Johnsville, son of the late Thomas and Jennie (Kamenska) Stankewich. On August 8, 1943 he was united in marriage with Mary Papa at St. Patrick's Church. They shared 67 wonderful years together. Ziggy graduated from St. Johnsville High School, Class of 1938. He was a Shipping Manager at Palatine Dye in St. Johnsville. Ziggy was a loving husband. He was a proud veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army and was a member of the St. Johnsville American Legion Post No. 168. Ziggy loved sports. He loved going to Saratoga to watch and bet on the horses. He enjoyed his yearly visits to Maine. He took great interest in his great great nephew's sports games. Ziggy was always buying from the home shopping networks, with his favorite being QVC. Survivors include his loving wife Mary , his many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews. The family will receive relatives and friends from 4-8 pm on Sunday June 26, 2011 at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville. Ziggy's Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11am on Monday June 27, 2011 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Rev. Rafal Dadello officiating. Procession will follow to St. Johnsville Cemetery where he will be laid to rest . The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at St. Johnsville Rehabilitation and Nursing Center for the love and care they gave to Ziggy while he was there. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations in Ziggy's name be made to St. Johnsville Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
