Obituary of David Thomes

MOHAWK-Mr. David J. "Dave" Thomes, age 71, of Walnut Street, a lifelong Mohawk resident passed away following a brief illness at St. Luke's Healthcare, New Hartford. At the time of his passing his family offered him comfort and loving support. He was born on February 18, 1940 in Mohawk, son of the late Ralph and Harriet (Stone) Thomes and was graduated from Mohawk High School. Dave enlisted with the US Army in 1959 and received an honorable discharge on July 16, 1962 holding the rank of SP4. He was united in marriage with Karen L. Hall in Las Vegas, NV a union built upon love and respect every day of their years together. In 1997, Dave retired after 35 years of dedicated service from Chicago Pneumatic when the company moved to another state. Dave was a proud lifelong Mohawk Mohican. He retained a longtime membership with the Mohawk American Legion and was very active with the Mohawk Fire Department along with serving as an exempt fireman. He loved being outdoors, fishing and boating and in his spare time enjoyed bowling and golfing. Dave was hard-working man guided by a clear and strong set of values which provided him with principles for his career, community involvement and for his personal life as well. For the past seven years he enjoyed wintering in Florida. He leaves his beloved family; his wife Karen L. Hall of Mohawk; his children: Robert "Bob" Thomes and wife Helen of Mohawk and Sandra "Sandy" Oldfield and husband Randy of Herkimer; his cherished grandchildren: Brandon, Alexis and Aleah Oldfield; sisters in law: Mary Thomes and Susan Dillon and husband Tom; brother in law: Richard Hall and wife Kathy; nieces and nephews: Ralph Thomes, Susan McCampbell and husband Tom, Jodi Castillo and husband Brian, Sarah Taillon, Justin Taillon and wife Mandy and Kimberly Hall; also surviving are aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his brothers: Ralph and Dayton Thomes. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects at the Enea Family Funeral Home, Main St. between Ilion and Frankfort (894-8000) on Friday morning, August 5, 2011 from 9- 11 am and also invited to his funeral service commencing at 11 am also on Friday at the funeral home with Chaplain Kenneth Palmer, officiating. Procession will follow to Mohawk Cemetery II where he will be laid to rest. Military honors will be offered by the US Army. Members of the Mohawk American Legion will conduct their service on Friday morning at 9:30 am and the Mohawk Fire Department and Exempt Firemen at 10:30 am. The fire department will also lead the funeral cortege on Friday morning and present a casket honor throughout visiting hours. A heartfelt thanks is extended on behalf of the family to the doctors, nurses and staff at St. Luke's Healthcare for their care and compassion.
