Obituary of Gladys Townsend

ILION - Gladys L. Townsend, age 99, formerly of Forge Hill Estates, Ilion, passed away on Thursday, June 17, 2010, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Utica, NY. She was born on December 3, 1910, in Milford, NY, the daughter of Jesse and Mary (Holmes) Welch, and attended Ilion High School. On June 29, 1940, she was married to Kenneth M. Townsend in Ilion. He died on February 13, 1999. Gladys was employed at Remington Typewriter Co. for 26 years, retiring in 1950. For thirteen years, she and her husband, Ken, owned and operated the Colonial House Restaurant in Newport. Mrs. Townsend was a member of the Frankfort United Methodist Church, past Noble Grand of the Frankfort Rebekah Lodge #198, past Matron of the Evening Star, Valley Chapter #82 (Order of the Eastern Star), Ilion, and member of D.A.R. (Col. Marinus Chapter). In the past, she spent several winters in Vero Beach, FL, with her husband, Ken. Survivors include several nieces and nephews, including Ron Parshall of Poland; several cousins, including Nancy Flanagan of West Winfield, NY; her sister-in-law, Mrs. Beryl Welch, of West Falls, NY; close friends, Shirley Miller, of Mohawk, and Lorel Rathbun, of Ilion; and her many friends at the Mohawk Valley Nursing Home, Ilion. She was predeceased by her husband, Ken; her brother, Stewart Welch; and her sister, Mildred Asklof. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 22, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at the Morning Star United Methodist Church, Acme Rd., Frankfort, NY, with Rev. Robert Wollaber, Pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Armory Hill Cemetery, Ilion. Calling hours are on Monday, June 21, 2010, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Rd., Ilion. The Evening Star, Valley Chapter #82 (Order of the Eastern Star), service will be held on Monday, June 21, 2010, at 5:30 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to Morning Star United Methodist Church, 36 Second St., Ilion, NY 13357. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. All funeral and burial arrangements have been prearranged and entrusted to her long time friend and family funeral director, Don Applegate.
