Youker 80 of 34 West State Street Dolgeville, died Monday October 10, 2005 in Folts Home in Herkimer where he was a resident since April. Bill was born in Dolgeville on February 25, 1925 the son of the late Clarence J. and Catherine (Goodman) Youker and was a graduate of Dolgeville High School. He continued his education by getting a B.S. degree in History from Utica College of Syracuse University, and a MA degree in History from SUNY at Oneonta. A Veteran and former POW from World War II Bill served honorably with Co. B, 1st Battalion 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, and 82nd airborne Division of the Army. He entered the service on March 24, 1943 and began serving in the European Theater. Bill was reported MIA on June 6, 1944. He spent time in Stalag X11A, Limburg, Germany and was then sent to POW camp at Muhlburg, Germany- Stalag IVB. He was honorably discharged on December 1, 1945 with the rank of PFC. He earned the American Service Medal, EAME Service medal, the Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal, the Bronze Star and the POW Medal. His marriage to the former Maxine E. Heller on July 10, 1948 in the First Presbyterian Church in Dolgeville. The Rev. Dr. Ernest Houghton officiated. They have shared 57 years of life together. Bill?s career started as a foreman at the Adirondack Bat Company of Dolgeville, then as Plant manger at the US Bobbin and Shuttle Company at its Tupper Lake mill. While at Adirondack Bat he hand turned special orders of ash wood bats for major league baseball players for Harold Schumacher. While working in this capacity Bill attended Utica College evening classes earning his BA degree. Having received his degrees Bill turned to the education field, teaching High School Social Studies and History in the St. Johnsville Central School system, retiring from there in 1986. Bill was very active in the community, as a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder and clerk of Session for many years. A member of Troop 18 Boy scouts of America his whole life beginning in his youth, serving as an assistant Scoutmaster, then as Scoutmaster for many years along with serving on the Troop Committee. Bill was also honored by receiving the distinguished Silver Beaver Award from the Scouts. He was a member of the Dolgeville Cemetery Association Board of Trustees and was a founding and charter member of the Dolgeville Manheim Historical society, also serving as its president. His other affiliations included membership with the American Legion Post #31 of Little Falls, the Dolgeville Masonic Lodge #796 F&amp;AM and the American ex-POW- Central New York Chapter having served as its Adjutant. He personally enjoyed building ship models, wood carving, specializing in shore birds and water fowl, and visiting maritime museums along the East coast. He also enjoyed camping and hiking throughout the years. He is survived by his wife Maxine of 57 years, a Daughter and her husband Cathie E. and Robert Maxwell, a Son and his wife Charles and Jean Youker a Brother and his wife Zane and Deborah Youker and a Sister Dian Crowley all of Dolgeville, his Grandchildren Jeremy and Seth Maxwell, Tess Elizabeth Youker his step Grandchildren Ronald Brant and Sherry Ashwood and their spouses and families. Also Nieces and Nephews. A Memorial service will be held Saturday October 15th, 2005 at 10 AM in the United Lutheran Presbyterian Church on Faville Avenue Dolgeville. The Rev. James Paulson will officiate. Burial with Military Honors will follow in the Rural Park Cemetery, Inghams Mills. Calling Hours are on Friday from 5-8 PM at the Roberts &amp; Enea Family Funeral Home 3 Faville Avenue Dolgeville. Members of the Dolgeville Masonic Lodge will offer ritualistic services at 7PM at the funeral home. Memorial contributions in Bill?s name may be made to the Dolgeville- Manheim Historical Society 74 S. Main street Dolgeville or to the Alzheimer?s Association of CNY or Hospice &amp; Palliative Care of CNY. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home and at the church service.
