Obituary of John Komar

ST. JOHNSVILLE- John Komar passed away at his home on Baum Road on Wednesday, March 2, 2011. He was born In Amsterdam on Aug.24, 1914, the middle son of five. His parents Stanislas "Steve" Komorowski and Stanislawa "Stella" (Solinska) Komorowski were born in Poland. When he was very small the family moved from the city to a farm on Queen Ann Road near Ft. Hunter. John attended the Mill Point School through eighth grade, but in order to go to high school he had to go to Amsterdam. As there was no school bus at that time, it was necessary for him to ride into Amsterdam on a milk truck, which he did, graduating from Amsterdam High School in 1931. In 1933 the family purchased a dairy farm on Baum Road north of St. Johnsville. It was well endowed with a grove of maple trees and John and his brothers built a sugar shack and made and marketed maple syrup. In 1935 John married the girl next door, Lillian Moskey. In 1936 they moved into a home on Baum Road where John lived until his death. The couple had one daughter, Shirley. John worked as a cutter in the Luxuray Mills, Ft. Plain, from 1935 to 1945. When his three brothers joined the army in 1942, he stayed to help his father on the farm. Also during this time John ran a milk route, picking up the full milk cans from the neighboring farms every morning and delivering them to the milk station in Ft. Plain before going to work in the mill. When his brothers returned home after the war, he left his job in the Luxuray and worked for a few years at the H.P.Snyder Bicycle Mfg. Co. in Little Falls as a welder. In 1948 he went into partnership with John Hajczewski and they purchased the R.Z. Smith Feed Mill building in Hallsville. From there they operated their business as Hallsville Farm Supply for over 30 years. They sold and serviced Minneapolis-Moline equipment, as well as Oliver, Meyer, and Gehl machinery. They also sold and serviced Bombardier Snowmobiles for several years. John did the milling, custom grinding and blending for the many family farms that were his customers. They sold Purina feeds and also feed from Caswell's. John was the manager and did all the bookkeeping for the business. John was involved in Ft. Plain community events and served many years on the Norstar Bank Advisory Board, retiring in 1990. His wife "Lily" predeceased him in 1971. In 1972 he married Hazel (Nagele) Suits and welcomed her two daughters Virginia and Janet to his family.John was a very busy person and often involved in projects of all sorts. Over the years he extensively remodeled the house, designed a pond at home, developed a wildlife friendly pond and marsh area on the farm, and installed a swimming pool with bathhouse, to name a few. He enjoyed working on and improving his property and did his own maintenance and repairs. He really enjoyed having family gatherings and parties at his home in the summertime. He also especially enjoyed traveling. His business allowed for opportunities to travel to conferences and shows across the country and he and his wives attended these as well as taking extensive vacations. He has visited most states in the USA. After retiring from the Hallsville business, he and Hazel wintered in Kissimmee, FL for many years as well as traveling to many places up and down the east coast. He is survived by his wife Hazel who is living at home. Also surviving are his daughter Shirley ( Hector) Allen, grandchildren Mary 'Beth (Merwyn) Jones, John Hector Allen and wife Norma, Suzanne ( David) Bladek and Celia (Shaye) Williams, In addition are Virginia Fox, grandchildren Lynn ( Floyd) Stever, Valerie(Fox) Feagles, also Janet Tompson, grandchildren Jennifer ( Todd) Whitney, Jill Tompson, Julie Tompson,. John also has eleven great grandchildren and 4 great, great grandchildren. John was predeceased by his parents, his wife Lillian, and all his brothers: Joseph, Edward, George, and Charles, Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects on Saturday, March 5, 2011 from 1:00-3:00pm at the Enea Funeral Home 9 Center St. St. Johnsville (518 568-2300). John's funeral service will commence at the conclusion of calling hours and will take place at the funeral home with Father Rafal Dadello officiating. Burial will be in the spring at the St. Johnsville Cemetery.
