Obituary of Mary Jayne Powers

UTICA - Mary Jayne Powers, age 90, formerly of Spring St., Utica, died on Tuesday, October 25, 2011, at St. Luke's Home, Utica, after a long illness. She was born on August 31, 1921, in Brantingham, NY, the daughter of John and Anna (Slifka) Rapavi, and attended Lowville Academy in Lowville, NY, and Cortland State Teachers College in Cortland, NY. She was happily married to her beloved Leon "Pete" Powers. He died on October 30, 1976. In her early years, she was employed at GE in Utica and was later a Librarian at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. More recently, she was a Senior Clerk at Dunham Public Library, Whitesboro, where she was very active with the children's programs, retiring several years ago. She enjoyed family get-togethers, music, and trips to Brantingham. Survivors include her daughter, Rose Marie Waldbillig, of Port Leyden, NY; her grandson, Robert O'Conner and his wife Jill; three great-grandchildren, Robert Trey, Dawn and Cami, all of Brantingham, NY; Three sisters and one brother-in-law, Eva and Larry King, of Schuyler, Pauline Stemmer, of Rochester, and Anne Scheuerman, of Rochester; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Alec Rapavy, of Herkimer, and Andrew and Millie Rapavi, of Fairfax, VA; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great nephews; and many friends. She was predeceased by one son, James, and four brothers, Paul, George, Mike and Andro "Pete" Rapavi. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, October 28, 2011, at Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Rd., Ilion, with Rev. Richard Dellos, Pastor of St. Joseph & St. Patrick Church of Utica, officiating. Interment will follow at Brantingham Cemetery in Brantingham, NY. Visitation will be on Friday, October 28, 2011, from 12 noon to 1:00 p.m., prior to the funeral home service. In lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society. Donation envelopes are available at the funeral home. All service arrangements and supervision are entrusted to Mary Jayne's nephew, Don Applegate, Funeral Director.
