Obituary of Thomas Meehan

Mr. Thomas Francis Meehan 89 of 7272 State Rt 29 Dolgeville, Town of Oppenheim, died Tuesday December 27, 2011 at Little Falls Hospital of natural causes. He was born on October 6, 1922 in Carbondale, PA. the son of Charles Cyril Meehan and Genevieve Florence Clarke and was the grandson of James and Margaret Hickey Meehan of Mayfield, PA. A veteran of WW II he served honorably in the United States Navy from November 26, 1942 until his discharge on December 21, 1945. He served aboard the USS Iowa as a Carpenter's Mate 3/C, also attending the Naval school for Fire Fighters. His medals included the Good Conduct Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Medal w/2 Stars, Asia-Pacific Medal w/8 Stars, the Victory Medal ,the American Theater Medal and the Combat Action Ribbon. Upon returning from the services he was a fireman with the city of Newark, New Jersey obtaining the rank of Captain of 16 Engine Company. He retired from there in 1982. Mr. Meehan was twice married, first to Marcia Melissa Tinker on June 4, 1955 in Minneapolis, MN. She predeceased him on September 27, 2009. His second marriage was to Jean Puglise- Augar on April 8, 2004 in the Town of Oppenheim. Mr. Meehan was a member of the VFW Post #4915 of Herkimer, and the Retired Police & Fireman's Association of Essex County, NJ. Professional Firefighters Association AFLCIO of Newark, New Jersey. His personal interests were in landscape oil painting. He is survived by his wife Jean of Oppenheim, his son Charles Patrick Meehan of Herkimer, His daughters Margaret Melissa Meehan-Johnson and her husband Edward Roy Johnson of Oppenheim, and Michelle Marcia Meehan of Gloversville, A brother Jerome Meehan and his wife Joan of Clarke, NJ, his grandchildren Joseph Mark Johnson and his wife Stephanie, Gregory Paul Johnson and Brenda Pollard, and Stephanie Chmielewski, his great grandchildren Kaleb , Tori and Kacy Johnson, his step Children Tammy Chmielewski and her husband Walter of Dolgeville and David Augar of Little Falls, his nephews Ken and Keith Meehan and his niece Kris Meehan all of Clarke, NJ. He was predeceased by a son Thomas Tay Meehan in 1967, and his stepmother Rosalind Dempster Meehan-Dobbins. Graveside services will be held in the spring at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville, New York at the convenience of the family. Memorials may be sent to the Oppenheim Fire Department 6786 State Hwy 29 St. Johnsville, NY 13452 in his memory. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Brian A.
