Obituary of Stevo Djurdjevich

MOUNT VISION-Stevo Djurdjevich, 77, passed away on October 1, 2009. Stevo was born on April 6, 1932, the son of Stojan and Stana (Ruzic) Djurdjevich in Selo Markovac, Slavonija, in the former Yugoslavia. He married Barica Jagodic on May 22, 1965 in New York City. Stevo was locally known with the last name of Durdevic, shortened from the original spelling when he arrived in the United States in 1962. Stevo’s journey to America took five years having lived and worked in Trieste, Italy for one year and Paris, France for four years before arriving in New York City. Prior to moving to Mount Vision and establishing a small family dairy farm, he worked as an auto mechanic on French and Italian make cars. Stevo proudly fulfilled his dream of becoming an American Citizen in 1967, yet instilled his ethnic and religious traditions in his children and grandchildren. Stevo was a charismatic and widely known dairy farmer in the area and can be remembered most for his quick wit and natural flair for story telling. In his retirement he enjoyed gardening. Stevo was a self taught musician who played the accordian and sang. One of his proudest moments in his musical career was performing at the 1964 World Fair in New York City. Stevo is survived by his wife of 44 years, Barica, his daughter, son-in-law and grandson, Mira, Jim and Elijah Dillenbeck of Mount Vision, his sons Tomislav of New York City, Milan of Mount Vision, Bogdan of Serbia, grandson, Nemanja, of Serbia, brother Djura of Serbia and nephews, Dusan, Zjelko and Mirko of New York City. Stevo was predeceased by his parents, his sisters Stana & Ljuba and brothers Dragan, Nikola, and Sreto. Traditional Eastern Orthodox funeral services and burial will be held at the cemetery chapel of Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Monastery in Jordanville on Monday, October 5 at 12:30 p.m. officiated by Fr. Roman Krassovsky. There will be no calling hours. Funeral Arrangements are by the Enea Family Funeral Home, 220 N. Washington St., Herkimer (866-1011). Donations in his memory may be made to the Laurens Emergency Squad, Mount Vision Fire Department or Hartwick Emergency Squad. Monastic tradition requires women to wear long skirts/dresses with a head covering of scarf or hat.
