Obituary of Franklin Harter

MOHAWK - Franklin “Frank” L.B. Harter, age 72, of 8 Orchard St., Mohawk, passed away on Friday, November 13, 2009, at home, with his loving family by his side. He was born on April 10, 1937, in Herkimer, the son of John and Lois (Petrie) Harter, and attended Herkimer schools. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars, serving in the U.S. Air Force for over 20 years. On July 21, 1956, he was married to Florence Zember at St. Anthony’s Church, Herkimer, by Father Urbano. Frank also worked at Remington Arms Co. for 24 years, retiring in 1998. He was an active volunteer and bingo caller at Valley Health Services, Herkimer. Mr. Harter was past commander and a life member of Mohawk American Legion Post #25, past commander of the Herkimer County American Legion and past officer of District 5. Frank was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, 40 et 8, and Herkimer VFW. Frank loved being with his family. He always had a joke that would make you laugh. His family really enjoyed his chicken and rib barbeques. Mr. Harter was also an avid hunter and fisherman. Survivors include his wife, Florence; his children, Pamela Smith and her husband, Charles, of Mohawk, John Harter and his wife, Charlynne, of Mohawk, and Sandra Clark and special friend, Randy Swartout, of New Berlin; six grandchildren, James Albin, Catherine Albin, Crystal Massey and husband, Steve, John Hall and special friend, Christina Boepple, Josua Huyck, and Angela Zeigler and husband, Vincent; two step-grandchildren, Gene Charles and James Charles and wife, Roberta; six great-grandchildren, Martin and Patrick Massey, Cole Zeigler, Jaden Huyck, Anna Marie Hall and Cheyanne Zeigler; six step-great-grandchildren, Gene, Sarah and Amanda Charles, Stephanie Backer, and Jon and Margaret Charles; three sisters, Verna Gydesen, of Ilion, Dorothy Ward, of Oklahoma, and Linda LaMarshe, of Plattsburg; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by two brothers, William Harter and John Harter; three sisters, Mary Bouck, Wilmetia Merrell and Sherry Cote; and his son-in-law, Martin Huyck. Funeral services will be held 10:15 a.m., Tuesday, November 17, 2009, at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 220 N. Washington St., Herkimer, and 11:00 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Church, E. Main St., Mohawk, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Mark Cunningham, Sacramental Minister, assisted by Sister Mary Jo Tallman, Parish Life Director. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Herkimer, with full military honors (for retired service members) performed by a special U.S. Air Force Detail from McGuire Air Force Base, New Jersey. Calling hours are Monday, November 16, 2009, from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 220 N. Washington St., Herkimer. Members of the Mohawk American Legion Post #25 will conduct their ritualistic service at 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The family wishes to thank the staffs of Valley Health Services and Hospice for the excellent care given to Frank. In lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to Valley Health Services or Hospice. Donation envelopes are available at the Enea Family Funeral Home, Herkimer.
