Obituary of Alice Ivan

EAST HERKIMER-Mrs. Alice R. (Follmer) Ivan, 87 of 201 Main Road, East Herkimer passed away peacefully on Monday evening, Dec. 21, 2009 in Valley Health Services, Herkimer with the love and support of her family by her side. Her passing occurred just short of two months after the passing of her beloved husband, Stephen. She was born in the town of Stark on May 20, 1922, daughter of the late Philip and Amelia (Scherle) Follmer and educated in Van Hornesville schools. The Ivan family has resided in East Herkimer since 1946. On August 31, 1940 she was united in marriage with Stephen “Steve” Ivan in the Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, Little Falls with the Rev. J.S. Karl Riebesell, officiating; a blessed union of 69 years until his passing on October 20, 2009. She was employed at one time by Salada Tea, Little Falls and last employed with the former MDS Company of Herkimer. She was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church, Little Falls. Mrs. Ivan was a very active member of the Town of Herkimer Senior Citizens and served as secretary and then as president. Mrs. Ivan was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who took wonderful care of her family. She spent many years tending to the needs of her loved ones and loved baking and cooking for them. In her spare time she enjoyed sewing and reading. Survivors include his loving family; three daughters and sons in law: Barbara and Richard Holmes of Ames, Janice Merena of Herkimer, and Donna and John “Jack” Wilcox of Herkimer; six grandchildren: Kyle and Brenda Merena of Ilion, Stephanie and Timothy Wiegand of Las Vegas, Nevada, Kelly Merena of Herkimer, Brianne Wilcox of Herkimer, Ella Wilcox of Herkimer and Kimberly Favreau of Idaho; two great grandchildren: Allison and Grace Wiegand of Las Vegas, Nevada; two brothers in law: George Ivan of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Andrew Ivan of Australia; many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers: Henry Follmer and Philip Follmer; two sisters: Alfreda Smith and husband Dean and Anna Numerick and husband Fred; a son in law: Peter Merena of Herkimer; and by a nephew: Philip Smith. The family will be present at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 220 N. Washington St., Herkimer to receive relatives and friends on Saturday, December 26, 2009 from 12-3 p.m. Mrs. Ivan’s funeral will commence at 3 p.m. on Saturday following visitation at the funeral home with Deacon Jay Berry of Christ Lutheran Church, Little Falls officiating. She will be laid to rest with her husband next spring in Church St. Cemetery, Little Falls. Kindly consider memorial offerings to the town of Herkimer Senior Citizens, Peter Merena Scholarship Fund, East Herkimer Volunteer Fire Department or to MOVAC; envelopes are available at the funeral parlor. Members of the town of Herkimer Senior citizens will gather at the funeral home to conduct their service on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The family would like to offer their thanks to the staff of Valley Health Services, Herkimer.
