Obituary of John Loscavo

Herkimer-Mr. John R. "Lefty" Loscavo, of Dewey Avenue, Herkimer, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday evening, November 17, 2009. He was born on December 19, 1926 in Herkimer, the son of the late Frank and Bridget (Sylvestri) Loscavo and graduated from Herkimer High School, “Class of 1945.” Mr. Loscavo gained the nickname “Lefty” in his earlier years from his active involvement with Herkimer High School sports where he was an exceptional athlete and ever so proud to be on the undefeated team. He loved to reminisce about many memories that he created throughout his athletic career . Mr. Loscavo answered the call of duty enlisting with the United States Army on March 14, 1945 and was honorably discharged on December 14, 1946. He was a proud veteran having received the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Philippines Independence Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. John was employed with the United States Post Office in Herkimer, retiring after over 20 years of dedicated service. John was also employed with the former Library Bureau. On June 12, 1948, John was joined in marriage with the former Josephine Battaglia at St. Bridget’s Church, Rochester. Mrs. Loscavo passed away on August 18, 2004. Throughout the 56 years of their union, the couple celebrated the blessings of each day with togetherness and dedication raising three beautiful girls. Mr. Loscavo was a communicant of Sts. Anthony & Joseph Church, Herkimer. He belonged to the Tony R. George Italian-American Post located on the south side of Herkimer where he was a proud member for numerous years, serving as past commander. John was also a member of the Michael S. Pliseck VFW Post #4915 of Herkimer. His military career was a great source of satisfaction to him as evident by the pride he took in being a member of these two organizations. Many wonderful memories & friendships were created at the Tony R. George Post and the VFW. He also was a former member of the St. Anthony Crusaders. John is survived by his loving daughters: Rose Hoskins and her husband Isaac of Tampa, FL, Beatrice “Bea” Vivacqua and her husband Tom of Frankfort, and Johann Conkling and her husband Gordon of Erie, PA; four cherished grandchildren: David Worlock and wife Andrea, Maryanne Luckey and husband Wes (Thomas) Luckey, Brad J. Vivacqua, and Shelby Rose Conkling; five adored great-grandchildren: Brennan, Maleah, Tandy, Thomas and Nicholas; his devoted nephews: James, Frank, Terry & Dominick. He is also survived by a sister in law: Theresa Battaglia of Rochester and by many dear family friends. He was preceded in death by one brother, Dominick “Mico” Loscavo and one sister: Rose Loscavo Varre. The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, November 20, 2009 from 4-7 p.m. at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 220 N. Washington Street, Herkimer (866-1011). Members of the Herkimer VFW will conduct their service at 6 p.m. on Friday evening at the Enea Family Funeral Home. John’s funeral will commence on Saturday, November 21, 2009 at 10:15am with prayer at the funeral home, followed by his Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am, celebrated by the Reverend Anthony Ligato in Sts. Anthony & Joseph Church, S. Main Street, Herkimer. Procession will follow to Oak Hill Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife, Josephine. At John's request, memorial contributions may be made to Sts. Anthony and Joseph Church of Herkimer. Arrangements are under the direction of director-Daniel J. Enea. A man of strong and deep Italian heritage, just as he was genuine and sincere in articulating his beliefs, he was also unwavering incorporating them into his life. He was gifted with a wonderful personality, a generous heart, and a spirit of commitment to his family and friends. He was happiest when in the company of his wife, his “three girls”, his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He had a number of interests but took special pleasure in golfing and fishing. He will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known him.
