Obituary of Peter Merena

HERKIMER-Mr. Peter A. Merena, 94, formerly of 310 Moore Ave., currently a resident of the Folts Homes, Herkimer, passed away on Saturday morning November 21, 2009 with his loving family by his side. Peter was born on November 24, 1914 in Herkimer, the son of Diamen and Eva (Haszczyc) Merena and was educated in Herkimer schools. On November 26, 1942 he married the former Helen Devera, a blessed union of 64 years before her passing in April of 2008. In 1944 he was drafted into the United States Army proudly serving his country until being honorably discharged in 1946. He belonged to the ILGWU union working at Derby Sportswear as a garment cutter until their closing, then at P&K Dress Factory in Little Falls until his retirement in 1979. “Jadjie” as he was affectionately called by his family, played in an adult basketball league but his passion was golf. You would find him with his brothers Moxy & Metro playing at Little Falls Golf Course. Peter played well into his nineties usually at Pine Hills , his favorite course , with cousin Michael Politylo. Peter is survived by his daughters, Karran Swayze, Maryann and Michael Dolence, Sylvia and Tom Malone; grandchildren; Katie Ann Dolence, Michael Aaron Dolence, Heather Malone, Lauren Malone and Rachel Malone; sisters-in-law: Lucia Devera and Katherine Merena; daughter-in-law: Janice Merena; grandchildren: Kyle Merena and his wife Brenda, Stephanie Wiegand and her husband Timothy, and Kelly Merena; great-grandchildren: Allison & Grace Wiegand; his cousin and golf buddy, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Politylo; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved son, Peter Michael Merena; a son in law: Brian Swayze; his siblings and their spouses: Michael and Mary Merena, Anna and Clayton Wood, Stephen and MaryAnn Merena, Moxy Merena, Metro Merena, Pauline Merena and Helen and Jack Clark; and by in-laws Michael Devera and Mary Devera. There are no calling hours. Interment will be at the convenience of the family in Oak Hill Cemetery, Herkimer. The family extends their thanks to the staff at Folts Homes for their kind and compassionate care given to Peter, especially the 4th floor staff.
