Obituary of Donald Smith

MOHAWK-Mr. Donald Irving Smith, 85, of Bellinger Street, beloved husband, our dad, our pa, our hero and inspiration, passed away on Saturday, October 31, 2009. He was born on April 27, 1924 in Herkimer, son of the late Ralph E. and Minnie Mae (Dievendorf) Smith and educated in Herkimer schools. He grew up in Herkimer and has resided in Mohawk for the past 46 years. On September 18, 1948 he was united in marriage with Roselyn VanNort in Niagara Falls. He was a proud US Veteran serving with the US Army enlisting in 1943 and honorably discharged in 1946 holding the rank of Technician, Fifth Grade. Mr. Smith was last employed with the former Library Bureau as a machine operator retiring after 34 years of dedicated service. He was of the Methodist faith and belonged to the Mohawk Crowley Barnum American Legion along with the Herkimer Michael S. Pliseck VFW Post #4915. An exemplary family man, Donald considered his loved ones to be his first priority and his greatest happiness. He constantly demonstrated his loving, kind and generous nature along with his caring and considerate heart. He shared a special closeness with his family members who will never forget the great times they shared with him. Survivors include his loving family; his wife Roselyn of Mohawk; four children: James Donald Smith and wife Gail of Herkimer; Judy Michaud and husband Robert of Ilion, Kathleen Schrader and husband Don of Herkimer, and Donna Martin and husband James of Mohawk; two brothers: Robert Smith and wife Edith of Clearwater, FL and Elton Smith and wife JoAnne of Naples, Fl.; seven cherished grandchildren: Michael Dayton and wife Tracy, Jason Dayton, Andy Schrader and wife Jill, Kelly Ivanchak and husband Greg, Melissa Smith, James Smith, II and Thomas Michaud; four adored great grandchildren: Colin Dayton, Mattea and Will Schrader and Molly Ivanchak; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Smith’s funeral will commence at 12:30 pm on Tuesday, November 3, 2009 from the Enea Family Funeral Home, 220 N. Washington St, Herkimer with the Rev. Robert Wollaber, officiating. Relatives and friends may pay their respects at the funeral home on Tuesday from 11:00 am until the time of the service. He will be laid to rest in Oak Hill Cemetery, Herkimer. Military honors will be accorded by the US Army. The Mohawk American Legion will conduct their service at the funeral home on Tuesday at 11:15 am and the Herkimer VFW will conduct their service at 12:00 p.m.
