Obituary of Jody Karla

SYRACUSE/ILION-Jody Lynn (Tanner) Karla, 32 of November Lane, Syracuse, an Ilion native, passed away on Friday evening, September 25, 2009 in Community General Hospital. Jody succumbed to a courageous battle with Cystic Fibrosis and was currently on the lung transplant list at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. She was born on June 15, 1977 in Ilion, daughter of Allen and Janet (Busher) Tanner and was a graduate of Ilion High School. On August 14, 2004 she was united in Holy Matrimony with Sean Robert Karla at the United Methodist Church, Skaneateles. Their union of 5 years was based on both respect and commitment. Jody graduated cum laude from Syracuse University with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and mathematics education. She was a graduate of LeMoyne College with a Master Degree in secondary education. While at Syracuse Univeristy, Jody was a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society, Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society, and Eta Pi Upsilon Woman’s Leadership Honorary. She was a student peer advisor for the School of Education and was a member of the Academy of Mathematics Education. She was a recipient of the Chancellor’s Scholarship and the Senior Honors Scholarship. She continued her love of mathematics at Marcellus High School where she loved teaching for the past 10 years. At Marcellus, Jody served as a class advisor, mathematics league advisor, helped supervise school activities, and assisted with coaching. She was awarded the “Mustang” award at Marcellus High School for excellence in teaching. Jody was also employed by Onondaga Community College as a math teacher for SAT exam students. Though Jody’s life with us was short, she had a gift of reaching out to others and will be missed by all who knew her. Jody loved scrapbooking, trips to their camp at Canadarago Lake and playing with her chocolate lab “Reno”. Just as in her professional life, Jody considered the numerous and varied relationships in her personal life to be her greatest joy, her foremost responsibility and her most rewarding privilege. She had many loved friends and was an avid fan of the Syracuse University Orange, Dallas Cowboys, and New York Yankees. In her spare time she enjoyed gardening, cooking and number puzzles. Survivors include her beloved family; her husband: Sean Karla of Syracuse; her parents: Al and Janet Tanner of Ilion; two sisters: Kerri Tanner of Saratoga Springs and Nicole (Tanner) Gadziala and husband Rudy of Selkirk; a special aunt: Lois Busher Arndt of Mohawk; a special niece: Marisol Annette Gadziala; father in law and mother in law: Robert and Norma Karla of Ilion; a sister in law: Jodi and Mark Arsenault of Newport; nephews: Tyler and Kyle Arsenault; and many loved cousins including: Kevin and David Arndt, Marc, Michael and Tara Tanner. She was preceded in death by her grandparents: Henry and Harriet Busher and Ernest and Joan Tanner. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Rd., between Ilion and Frankfort, 894-8000 on Tuesday, September 29, 2009 from 4-8 p.m. The funeral will commence at 11 am on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 from the Enea Family Funeral Home, Ilion/Frankfort with the Rev. Brian Engel, pastor of Mohawk Reformed Church officiating. Procession will follow to Mohawk Cemetery where she will be laid to rest.
