Obituary of Deborah Sluyter

MOHAWK-Mrs. Deborah R. (Young) Sluyter, 59, of John Street, Mohawk passed away unexpectedly on Thursday morning, October 1, 2009 in St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center, Utica. She was born on June 7, 1950 in Utica the daughter of the late Carter Young and Roberta (Webb) Young. She graduated with the Hamilton High School, Class of 1968 and continued her education attending Herkimer County Community College, Mohawk Valley Community College and Oneonta State. She has been a longtime Mohawk valley resident. In October of 2000 she was united in marriage with Ross E. Sluyter. Deborah was currently employed at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center as a dietary aide and was of the Methodist faith. She was a very active member of the VFW Auxiliary Post #502 where she served as past president. Deborah worked with various local restaurants for the past 35 years including the Whiffletree INN, Ilion and Hotel Utica where she was a hostess and dining room supervisor. A loving wife, mother and grandmother she will be sadly missed by her family and friends. In her spare time, she enjoyed sewing, painting and working with crafts. Survivors include her husband “Rossie” as Deb called him; her mother, Roberta; her son: Matthew Fox and wife Violet of Sarasota; a daughter: Karinna “Karrie” Fox of Ilion; two brothers: Neil Young and wife Cindy of New Hampshire and Robert Young and wife Gwen of Cazenovia; her cherished grandchildren: Kirsten Fox and Damian Pettengill; her aunt “Corkie” Fryer of Madison and aunt Jane Elliot of Pennsylvania; many nieces, nephews, cousins and step children. Relatives and friends are invited to calling hours on Sunday, October 4, 2009 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Road, between Ilion and Frankfort, 894-8000. Deborah’s funeral will commence at 10 am on Monday, October 5, 2009 from the chapel of the funeral home where prayer will be offered by Chaplain Jim Cogar. Procession will follow to Mohawk Cemetery, II where she will be laid to rest. The VFW Auxiliary Post #502 will conduct their service at 7 p.m. at the funeral parlor on Sunday afternoon. Contributions in Deborah’s memory may be made to a charity of your choice; envelopes may be obtained at the funeral parlor. The family extends its sincere gratitude to MOVAC Ambulance, St. Elizabeth Medical Center Emergency Room, Rural Metro Ambulance and to the Mohawk Police Department all of whom provide outstanding and professional care.
