Obituary of Richard Smith

Ilion: Mr. Richard W. Smith, 86, of Ilion, passed away on Saturday, November 28, 2009, after a brief illness, at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center, Utica. Richard was also fondly known as Dick, Smitty and Chief. He was born on April 3, 1923, a son of the late Frederick and Fannie (Seufert) Smith. He was born in Utica and received his education there. He was, at one time, married to the former Elizabeth “Betty” Penner. He was a member of Herkimer First United Methodist Church. He also belonged to the Masons, Shriners, Scottish Rite Mason 32nd degree, Masonic Ilion Olive Branch 40, Noble Ziyara Temple Shriners, and Right Worshipful to Ciera Brazil. He made many trips to the Springfield and Boston Shriner’s Children’s Hospitals, transporting patients for their appointments. His favorite pastimes included going to Burger King to have coffee and meet his buddies; he was also an avid bowler for many years. He loved spending time with his family, especially telling his grandchildren the trouble he would get into when he was young and in school. Besides his former wife and very best friend, Betty, Richard is survived by his three daughters and their husbands: Robin and (Gary) Heimstead of Zephyrhills, FL; Rhonda and (Kenneth) Hamilton of Herkimer; and his “little girl” Renee and (Robert) Williams of Mohawk; He is also survived by his most precious grandchildren whom he is so very proud of: Julian and Sarah Duffy, Patrick and Ryan Hamilton, Lauren, Tristen and Brianna Williams; a brother: Robert Smith and his wife Marge of VA; and his best friend, Frank Cassella of Herkimer; also many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a great church family. He was predeceased by 4 brothers and 3 sisters. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects on Monday, November 30, 2009 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Road, between Ilion and Frankfort (894-8000). Dick’s funeral will commence on Tuesday morning, December 1, 2009 at 11:00 am at the funeral home with Reverend Janet Gleason of the Herkimer First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Carr Cemetery, Marcy.
