Marcia Melissa Meehan/ Sullivan Peacefully passed away at her home in Oppenheim NY, Sunday morning, September 27th 2009. After an extended 20 year battle with cancer. She was cared for at home by her family. Marcia was born August 12, 1934 Marcia Melissa Frederica Tinker. Springfield, State of Illinois Granddaughter of Dr. Fredrick W. Schlutz Pediatrician and Bio-Chemist Northwestern University Hospital Chicago ( born Green Iowa) and Emma Margaret Handke ( Evanston Illinois ) Granddaughter of Dr.-Edward T. Tinker DDS ( Dewitt ,Iowa) and Alma Kroger (Wheatland, Iowa) descendant of Thomas Tinker of New England. Marcia was the daughter of Dr. Harry Arby Tinker, (Wheatland, Iowa) and Margaret Schlutz Tinker (Minneapolis, Minnesota) She grew up in the family home located at 8800 Minnetonka Blvd St. Louis Park ,Minnesota and graduated from St Louis Park High School. Marcia was the Eldest and only girl in her family of 4 Brothers. Peter Tay Tinker of Ventura California, (deceased) Fredrick William Tinker and his wife Joan Tinker of Hayward, Wisconsin, Tay E. Tinker of Scottsdale Arizona. And Robin Harry Tinker of Minneapolis Minnesota. Marcia’s Higher Education included: Grinell College / Zoology Major 1952-1953 St Mary’s Nursing School, Mayo Clinic, Rochester Minnesota 1953-1954. Marcia returned to Rutgers University, Newark Campus in 1972 and received: Bachelors of Arts degree with a Dual Major in Elementary Education and Urban Education 1974 Graduate School of Education, Masters program Rutgers University, in Special Education 1976 Rutgers University, PHD in Early Childhood / Elementary Education 1979. Marcia was married June 4th, 1955 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, To Fire Captain, Thomas Francis Meehan, of Newark, New Jersey. Now of Oppenheim NY. Then was married to Frank P. Sullivan, of Newark NJ. February 14th, 1985 who pre deceased her October 10th 1997 Marcia worked as a nurses aid, part time sub and finally as a Special Education teacher at Branch Brook School for orthopedically handicapped students in the City of Newark from 1968 until retirement in 2000. She did this while continuing her education and re- entering the work force at age 38 after an absence of almost 20 years while being a wife and mother. Marcia worked very hard at academics earning, scholarships and many awards, and graduated with Honors Making her family so proud of her accomplishments. Marcia loved her students, and many have continued to write to her through the years. Marcia loved to Barbecue a good steak, Sit on the deck and watch the Gold finches while Oak Mountain would change color, this was her favorite time of year. Marcia traveled extensively, with family and friends visiting all the National Parks, Alaska being her favorite. Marcia loved St. Patrick's Day, celtic music and being Irish. She believed in supporting educational, environmental and conservation causes. She belonged to many organizations such as Retired Newark teachers Ass. Boys Town (Life member),Simithsonian,Audubon Society, Arbor Day Foundation, Sierra Club, National Parks Conservation Society, Defenders of wildlife, Boy scouts and girl scouts of america,ASPCA She had a variety of interests, and many hobbies, Cooking, ammasing a huge collection of regional cookbooks, Reading, Quilting with the seniors, sewing, and scherenschnitta. and oil painting with Erma & Jan She loved to Attend Oppenheim Sr.Citizens, spend time with friends, and was always on the go. And in particular she liked to spoil Her "puppy "& "Kitty" with treats. But Marcia's absolute favorite thing to do was going shopping! Marcia was pre deceased first by her Parents and brother Peter Tay Tinker, of Ventura California. Her son, Thomas Tay Meehan born April 11 th 1965 (Orange NJ) deceased July 29th 1969 Sparta NJ.And her husband Frank P Sullivan. Marcia leaves 3 Loving children, who will miss her very much, Daughter Margaret Melissa Meehan-Johnson of Oppenheim and her husband Edward Roy Johnson, whom she called her angel. Son Charles Patrick Meehan of Johnstown NY. And her youngest daughter Michelle Marcia Meehan of Gloversville NY. Grand son Joseph Mark Johnson and Stephanie Johnson of Brookfield NY. Gr.Gr.grandchildren Kacey and Tori Johnson Grandson Gregory Paul Johnson and Brenda Pollard of Stratford NY and their son, Marcia's newest Gr Gr Grandson Kaleb Johnson. Marcia Also leaves her Best and dearest friend of 53 years Theresa Hague, of Belville NJ Nieces and nephews Ken, Keith and Chris Meehan of Clark, NJ. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday October 10, 2009 at 9AM at St. Joseph’s Church Dolgeville. Father William A. Gorman , pastor will be the celebrant. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to any of the above named organizations or the Oppenheim Sr Citizen’s Center PO Box 225 Dolgeville, New York 13329. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Roberts & Enea Family Funeral Home 3 Faville Avenue Dolgeville.
