Obituary of Kathryn Slyke

DOLGEVILLE- Kathryn Van Slyke, 85, of 5 E. Faville Ave. entered into eternal rest on February 26, 2010 at Faxton-St. Luke’s Hospital. She was born on January 29, 1925 in Dolgeville, daughter of the late Jesse and Zaida (Howe) Luther. On August 17, 1946 she was united in marriage with Floyd “Bud” Van Slyke at the Universalist Church in Dolgeville. Their union lasted 48 years until his passing on October 23, 1994. During world war II, Kathryn worked at Remington Arms. She later attended and graduated from Utica Business School. Kathryn was a Tax Collector for the Town of Manheim for 28 years. A position which she took over from her mother, Zaida ,who was a Tax Collector for the previous 38 years. She and her husband,Bud, loved their life and time spent in Woodhull,a span of 47 years. Together, they were caretakers for T.J.Coolidge of Marblehead, Mass., during the summer months, from 1954 to 1994. Their home on Woodhull Lake was accessible only by boat and therefore surrounded by nature, an aspect that Kathryn very much enjoyed. Kathryn was of the Universalist faith. She was a member of the "Clara Barton Organization" for many years and participated in fund drives, such as the annual "clam chowder sale". She co-organized a fund drive for the American Cancer Society Daffodil sale, for several years. She organized a fund drive for the "Heart Fund". Her hobbies included gardening in the summer, fishing, hunting, collecting antiques, and baking. She enjoyed the outdoors and the mountain life and spending time with her children and grand children. Survivors include her daughter Jill Brownsell and her husband Tim of Inlet, NY; her sons Jason Van Slyke and his wife Mari of Havre, MT, Gregg Van Slyke of Inlet, NY, Martin Van Slyke and his wife Toni of Helena, MT; her grandchildren: Cassie Van Slyke, Cody Van Slyke, Sara Van Slyke, Briana Brownsell and Natalie Brownsell; and her nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her brothers Harold Luther and Ellis (Bud) Luther. Memorial visitation will be held Saturday March 6, 2010 from 3:00 to 4:00, with a memorial service at 4:00, at the Roberts & Enea Family Funeral Home, 3 E. Faville Ave, Dolgeville, NY. Sister Sharon Ann Boyd,RSM, will be officiating. Interment of Kathryn's cremains will be in the spring at the convenience of the family. The family would like to invite everyone back to the Dolgeville Fire Dept. Reception Room after calling hours to share in a celebration of Kathryn’s life.
