Obituary of Doris Huxtable

Millers Mills - Doris (O’Rourke) Huxtable, 91, of Millers Mills, NY, passed away on Friday, November 6, 2009, at Mohawk Valley Nursing Home, Ilion. She was born on July 26, 1918, in the Town of Columbia, the daughter of Frank and Mina (House) O'Rourke, and graduated from West Winfield High School. Doris attended MVCC and HCCC. On June 26, 1937, she was married to Henry (Brown) Huxtable in the Town of Columbia. He died on March 5, 1988. Doris was employed for 20 years at Herkimer County Dept. of Social Services in the Medicaid Dept., retiring in 1978. Doris was a member, past trustee and Sunday school teacher at the Community Baptist Church of Millers Mills. She was a 77 year member and past officer of the Millers Mills Grange #581. Doris received The Granger of the Year Award in 1988. For over 60 years, she was very active as publicity director in promoting the Millers Mills Ice Harvest locally, which attracted national attention from visits by noted CBS TV personality and newsman, Charles Kuralt. Her ice harvest video was played at the N.Y.S. Fair. She was also publicity director of the Grange sponsored old-fashioned ice cream social (in July), made with ice harvested in February. Doris donated a great share of her life in community and grange activities. Doris was also past treasurer, director and trustee of the Herkimer County Historical Society and past trustee of the N.Y.S. Regional Conference of Historical Societies. She was past commissioner of the General Herkimer Home, having been appointed by N.Y.S. Governor Wilson. Doris was past president of the Southern Herkimer County Republican Club in 1988 and a member of the Womens Republican Club of Herkimer County. She was a member and past regent of the Mohawk Valley Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution. Doris was also the historian for the Town of Columbia and in 1988 was elected town councilman of the Town of Columbia. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Henry F. and Susan W. Huxtable, and her daughter and son-in-law, Carol H. and Richard L. Collins, all of Millers Mills; four grandchildren, Eric Huxtable and his companion, Rebecca Luke, of Millers Mills, Colleen Dye and her husband, David, of Richfield Springs, Stephen Collins and his wife, Kelly, of Ilion, and Kathleen (Collins) Wheelock and her husband, Ron, of Millers Mills; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, parents and sister, Beatrice Murphy. Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m., Monday, November 9, 2009, at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Rd., Ilion, with Pastor C. Edward Woodworth, Jr., officiating. Interment will be in Millers Mills Cemetery. Calling hours are Monday, November 9, 2009, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the funeral home, prior to the services. Members of the Mohawk Valley Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution will conduct their ritualistic service on Monday at 11:20 a.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to the Community Baptist Church of Millers Mills or the Cedarville Fire Dept. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. The Huxtable family has entrusted all funeral and burial arrangements to family friend and funeral director, Don Applegate.
