ILION - Joan Bass Mahoney, age 74, of London Towers, Ilion, formerly of Mohawk, passed away on Monday, January 18, 2010, at Faxton-St. Lukes Healthcare, New Hartford, NY. She was born on June 28, 1935, in Herkimer, the daughter of Everett and Anna (Neth) Bass, Jr. After graduating from Mohawk High School in 1952, Joan Bass and Leonard Marmet, formerly of Mohawk, were united in marriage on July 18, 1953, and from this union came eight children. Joan later graduated from Niagara County Community College and also earned her master’s degree before working in the mental health field, retiring in 2001. Joan later married Daniel Boone Mahoney on March 20, 1980, who preceded her in death on February 9, 1992. Joan was an active volunteer for several organizations, most notably the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program. Also preceding Joan in death were her son, Leo Marmet, on November 15, 1971; brother, Arthur Bass, on April 26, 1952; brother, Duane, on July 28, 1981; father, Everett J. Bass, Jr., on June 29, 1982; sister-in-law, Helen Morgan Bass, on July 9, 1984; mother, Anna Neth Bass, on September 11, 2000; brother-in-law, John Sninchak, on June 7, 2004; son-in-law, Michael Hutton, on June 23, 2005; and sister, Rita Bass Sninchak, on August 13, 2006. Survivors include her brother, Everett (Ruth) Bass, III, Herkimer, NY; sons, Lawrence (Nancy) Marmet, Schenectady, NY, and Lorne (Gail) Marmet, Sunnyvale, CA; daughters, Louise (Michael) Deles, Seoul, Korea, Lucinda Hutton, Ransomville, NY, Lucille Estep, Ardmore, OK, Loretta (Tim) McCullers, Ardmore, OK, and Linda (Gordon) Freeman, Las Cruces, NM; grandchildren, Jennifer (John) Maine, Louise (Joe) George, Michael Marmet, Jessica (Brad) Solley, Monique (Jose) Armendariz, Marty McLean, Al Sabey, Duane Apodaca, Tyler Marmet, Larry Marmet, Eddy Marmet, Jamie Estep, Lucinda Deles, Leonard Deles and Alexander Marmet; great-grandchildren, Christopher Hoose, Lily Apodaca, Isabella Armendariz and Dustyn Marmet; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 1 PM, Saturday, January 23, 2010, at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Rd., Ilion, NY, with Father Mark Cunningham, Pastor of St. Francis de Sales Church, Herkimer, officiating. Visitation will be held Saturday, 12 Noon - 1 PM, prior to the funeral home service. A celebration of Joan’s life will be held immediately following the services at London Towers. Joan’s family has entrusted all arrangements to Don Applegate, Funeral Director.
