Obituary of James Fehlner

DOLGEVILLE- James R. Fehlner,64,of Hollisterville, PA, formerly of Dolgeville, entered into eternal rest Friday morning April 10, 2009 at St. Mary’s Villa Nursing Home, Elmhurst,PA. He was born on April 27,1944 in Little Falls the youngest son of the late Herman J. and Mary Elizabeth (Considine) Fehlner. He was a New York State Regents Scholar and graduated with distinction from Dolgeville Central High School, class of 1962. He received his undergraduate degree cum laude from Sienna College, Loudonville, NY, and his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Rochester, NY. He completed his dissertation work at Sir George Williams University in Montreal, Canada. He was a postdoctoral fellow at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. Prior to his illness, he was employed for twenty-five years at the Worthington Scranton Campus of the Pennsylvania State University as a professor of chemistry where he was active in providing greater educational opportunities for students including the founding of the University Scholars and Campus Honors Program at the local campus. He received several awards for his teaching, scholarship, and community service. He was a member of the Sigma Xi scientific honor society and the American Chemical Association. He was an active member of the Lacawac Wildlife Sanctuary near Ledgedale, PA for many years. He was a long time member of the St. Catherine of Sienna Catholic Parish in Moscow. He is survived by his beloved family; his wife Christina, daughters Rosemary and Florence, and his four brothers. A Mass of Christian Burial will commence on Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at 9:30am at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Dolgeville with the Rev. Peter Fehlner officiating. Interment will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Dolgeville.
