Obituary of Gary Hailston

Mohawk: Gary E. Hailston, 59, formerly of Ilion, passed away on April 27, 2009 at Highland Hospital, Rochester. Mr. Hailston was born on April 25, 1950 in Herkimer, a son of George “Roy” and the late Norma June (Yates) Hailston. Gary has resided in the Rochester area the last 15 years. He graduated from Ilion High School in 1969, and then attended the Air Force NCO Academy. Mr. Hailston was a member of the Air Force from 1971-1975 and 1977-1993, and attained the rank of Tech Sergeant, stationed at various Air Force bases internationally. Gary is a veteran of the Vietnam War and also served in support of Operation Desert Storm. He was previously employed as a courier for ACM Medical Laboratory in Rochester. Gary was a member of the Chili VFW Post and the ABATE motorcycle group. Gary is survived by his father, George “Roy” Hailston of Ilion; a daughter, Laura Hailston and Derek Alexander of Mohawk; two sons: Kenneth Hailston of South Carolina and Steven Hailston and his wife Tiffany of Alabama; a brother Alan Hailston and his wife Marcia of Virginia Beach; his girlfriend Jean Kosiorek of Rochester; special cousins, the Upson family of Rochester; two nieces: Robyn and husband Steve Spencer and their children Abby and Noah, and Kristine Hailston of Virginia Beach; his former wife, Sharon Scanlon; and several cousins and extended family members. He was predeceased by his mother, Norma June. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday, May 9, 2009 at 9:00 a.m. at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Road, between Ilion and Frankfort (894-8000). Committal will take place in Crown Hill Cemetery, New Hartford, directly following the service. There are no calling hours. Gary will be remembered for his love of the outdoors and many hobbies, including RC planes, his Harley, and making friends with everyone he met.
