Word has been received of the death of Julia Halkowich, 93, who was currently a resident at the Horace Nye Home in Elizabethtown, NY on August 22nd, 2009. She was born in Seymour, Connecticut March 13th, 1916, the daughter of Mary Demchko and Orest Kurilo. Her marriage to Metro Halkowich took place on June 16th, 1938 in Herkimer, NY. He died in 1974. Julia lived in Dolgeville for over 25 years and had been employed at the former Daniel Green Shoe Co. and Gehring Tricot Corp. She was a life member of the Herkimer VFW Auxiliary . In 1979 she moved to Keene Valley and since 2004 resided at the Keene Valley Neighborhood House. Julia enjoyed quilting, reading and watching baseball games. She also traveled throughout the U.S. in her retirement. Survivors include her daughter Mary Jaques and husband George ofKeene Valley and San Diego CA, her grandson Daniel, wife Ashley and great grandson Lee Henry of Escondido, CA, a sister Anna Karpowich, a brother Peter Kurilo, brother-in law Wasil (Anna) Halkowich all of Richfield Springs, sister-in-law Martha Misencik of Mohawk and several nieces, nephews, and their families. There will be no visitation. Julia's ashes will be interred at a private service in the Dolgeville Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Arrangements have been entrusted to W .M. Marvin's of Elizabethtown, NY , and the Roberts and Enea Family Funeral Home Dolgeville, New York.
