Obituary of Carol Hayes

MOHAWK - Carol Burns Hayes, 79, of Broomfield, Colo., passed away on Wednesday, June 17, 2009, after courageously battling multiple sclerosis for about three decades. Carol was born in Ilion, N.Y., on Nov. 2, 1929, the daughter of Edward J. “Ted” Burns and Edyth L. Burns, nee Leonhardt. She grew up in Mohawk and attended Mohawk Central School, where in 1947 she graduated Salutatorian of her class. Carol then attended Cornell University, majored in French and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in June of 1951. In October of 1952, Carol married Dr. Richard O. Hayes, a medical entomologist, at the Mohawk Reformed Church in Mohawk, N.Y. Dick’s work with the U.S. Public Health Service placed them in numerous residences throughout the country during their 57 years of marriage, including Bakersfield, Calif., Savannah, Ga., Taunton, Mass., Greeley and Fort Collins, Colo., Scottsdale, Ariz., and Broomfield, Colo. In addition to her duties as a loving housewife and mother, Carol taught in various public schools where she taught French, Spanish, German and Latin. She was always active in her community and a lover of music, sports and travel. She was adept at the piano, but played it less frequently in more recent years. Carol was a devoted church member, Presbyterian elder and a world traveler. Carol was survived by her loving husband, Richard; her son, Eric and daughter-in-law Kathy Hayes, her daughter, Lorraine and son-in-law Walter Trotter, her daughter, Nancy Armstrong, her son, Paul Hayes; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two brothers, Leighton and Edward Burns. She was predeceased by both of her parents and her brother, Robert Burns. Funeral services were held on June 22, 2009, at the Presbyterian Church of Broomfield, Colo. Local arrangements were entrusted to Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home, Don Applegate, Funeral Director.
